View Full Version : How to obtain a Maccat tarp?
Howdy everyone.getting ready to take the plunge
and start using a hammock!I am going with a Tom Claytor
Expedition model and would like to obtain one of Brian's tarps.
Here is the problem; I live in Upstate,NY and he can't ship within
New York State because of tax reasons and I don't have anyone
out of state to have it shipped to.Any suggestions?Or
is there anything else comparable on the market I should consider?
I don't have the skill, time, or resources to sew my own tarp,so
that is not a viable solution right now.Any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks for any and all help with this matter.
Gary

If you want you can have it shipped to me and then I can re-ship it back out to you.
Thanks for the welcome.I would like to work that out
with you and Brian.I really want one of his tarps.I will try to set
it up and will send you shipping money in advance if I can get it
set up.Thanks in advance for your help!

headchange4u 06-05-2007, 12:00 Thanks for the welcome. His site says he cannot ship within
New York State(State tax reasons). That's where I live.
See my edit above.
You have Brian ship the tarp to me in Ky and when I get it I can send it back to you in NY.
headchange4u 06-05-2007, 12:01 Is Brian located in NY state? Any chance of you just picking one up from him?
He's in Rochester, NY area, which is about a 4 hour
drive from me.
Hog On Ice 06-05-2007, 12:16 pick up or mail - still counts for sales tax purposes which is where the problem is

His site says nothing about picking an item up only shipping is a problem. He may not even allow you to pick up his tarps. I don't know.
From the OES site:
Also, due to sales tax, I cannot ship to any address in the State of New York. I am sorry for any inconvenience this may cause anyone. I will gladly ship to a friend or relative out of New York for your convenience.
stoikurt 06-05-2007, 13:58 Picking up in person is the same as going to the store and buying. That means he would have to collect sales tax.
Check the ridgeline length on the MacCat and the Claytor. The Claytor is a long hammock.

yep - might want the MacCat Titan instead of the Deluxe

The Titan isn't listed on OES any longer. I wonder if he still makes them?
NCPatrick 06-05-2007, 14:45 I suppose you could email him and ask...
Hog On Ice 06-05-2007, 18:04 was the Titan ever listed on the OES website?

I never saw it, but I always just assumed that it was because I've heard of it on a number of occasions. Perhaps someone who has one might chime in and tell us...
Hog On Ice 06-05-2007, 19:36 well I have the very first Titan - it was a custom job that Brian did for me - I think he might have mentioned other people that were interested in the Titan but I don't know if there were further sales - since it was a custom job it obviously was not listed on the site when I bought it.

I think he'll be OK with the Deluxe matched to the Expedition model...it's the Jungle model that's too long. I'd double check just to make sure.
It's too bad about the New York thing...I live less than two hours south in Elmira. I'd love to have one made that would be long enough for my Claytor Jungle hammock. It would have to be a "Titan" to cover that bad boy! For shipping, I even have a daughter who lives just over the border in PA.
Good luck, Miguel
I'm a little confused at why the sales tax thing is such a big deal. Isn't it fairly easy to get listed with the state as a seller and simply collect the tax? I'm in 2-person small business and we collect the tax without problem. I don't do the tax accounting personally, but my partner makes it seem easy to do.
Though Brian certainly has a full plate for the next few years, it would seem that he'll eventually want to do business inside the state of New York. Otherwise, his statespeople will have to look elsewhere for a good tarp and that seems ridiculous when he makes such nice ones right there, relatively locally. Perhaps New York has some ridiculous red tape for sales tax or something I don't know about?
Patiently waiting for my maccat to arrive...
Brian ships Priority Mail. The person receiving it can simply forward it to the original purchaser in NY without any extra postal charges involved. Just make sure that it's addressed to: Your Name c/o Whoever. This is exactly what my daughter in New Jersey did a couple of weeks ago when the MacCat arrived. I had phoned the post office there to try to divert it before delivery, but they said they had to deliver it first... then it could be reconsigned. Obviously the package cannot be opened or the postal forwarding is voided.
Kank is right - registering, collecting, and paying over the sales tax is not that complex - although it does take some time. If you are not reporting the income from your sales then you might not want to register because it will then require that you start paying income tax on your sales. Of course, income tax evasion is a crime. And mailing goods purchased by a NYS resident to an out of state resident in an attempt to avoid the sales tax is also a crime. Crimes can complicate your life way beyond whatever effort it would have taken to file the quarterly sales tax returns and report the income on your tax return.
trailale 10-08-2007, 22:25 Your biggest obstacle may lie in getting a response from Brian. I ordered a tarp probably over month ago. After not getting any confirmation from him, I sent an email. I still havn't heard anything. I understand this tarp thing is just part time for him, but I'm left wondering If need to get a tarp from somebody else. Does he usually just do business with folks he knows from the forums?

Sadly, that seems to be a typical tale here on this forum. While Brian makes a really nice product, he only seems to respond to inquiries and orders when he's getting ready to make a batch of tarps. You'll hear from him, but only when he has spare time at school.

No, he seems to deal with anyone who orders...but everyone gets delayed equally.
I understand his situation and think he's placing emphasis on what's really right for him...but I also wish, for the sake of hammock-camping enthusiasts, that he would partner with an established vendor who could be more customer-oriented.

I agree. Before anybody goes and does this, somebody, preferrably a lawyer, should figure out whether this is legal or not. It sounds illegal to me, but I'm just a prosecutor in Pennsylvania, and I admit I haven't researched it.
as far as i know its leagal, i mean technically, the out of new york stater bought it, and sold it asap to a new york stater. granted, it is cheep, but its not like brian COULD sell it to you. he says it is not possible, and offers to ship it to someone out of state for you.
its not like you do it to avoid takes, you do it because its the only possible way.
NO, im not biased, who cares where i live?

Several years ago a high profile jeweler in NYC tried the same scam - he shipped his product to a NJ address where a person then delivered it to a NY resident. He got convicted of sales tax fraud and got jail time.
I pay for my mortgage and my kids' college education representing people who have "issues" with the IRS and NYS tax department. I have never had a client who got incarceration tell me that his or her jail time was worth the money they saved.
Moreover, NYS has a"use tax" - if you purchase a product out of state, you have to pay the "use tax" when you bring it into the state. It is the substitute for the sales tax.
The answer to high taxes is VOTE! The answer is not finding ways to cheat.

That's the truth...
And don't come to Canada... 14% tax in Ontario (8% provincial sales tax, 6% federal goods and services tax...) Lets not even talk about Income tax or I'll start to cry...

the cost of socialized healthcare.
Actually if it was ALL going to healthcare I wouldn't be as upset... Mostly it goes to other things though...
If I want decent health care in a reasonable timeframe I have to pay for it or have insurance, just like south of the border...
Its the cost of excessive socialism and the misapprehension that if the government supplies it it doesn't cost anything... Combine that mentality with two other factors... 1) 1/3 of the Canadian workforce is employed directly by the government, and 2) an additional 1/3 of the Canadian population is supported to some extent by the government via social programs, welfare, housing, etc...
That means the remaining 1/3 has to fork over lots of bucks to keep the other 2/3 in the style they've become accustomed to. AND that since they're the majority its unlikely that it will ever change via voting.
pure_mahem 10-29-2007, 10:09 The secret is not to tell any one you are doing it. Also technically everyone whom has purchased a tarp is supposed to pay the applicable tax in there state. that's why if you buy a vehicle in one state and live in another you only pay tax in your home state. "technically"! Personally, I love shopping in New Hampshire No taxes on anything. Curious how much income is not reported by people who sell things on ebay? How many people don't pay taxes on the stuff they purchase of the internet if it wasn't charged to them at time of purchase...SSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH....don't tell the Government......ebay tax! or maybe like the phone company surcharges!
Just Jeff 10-29-2007, 20:26 The secret is to get back on topic... :D
Seriously, guys - if you want to talk politics take it to PMs. Or Whiteblaze (that part's a joke).
OOPS!!! :D Sorry!
I know I've been guilty of this lately.
