Very much worth having to me. Keeps my hammock off the ground and dirt free during set-up/take down. Works even better with your tarp.

I don't use them on my hammock; I use a bishopbag instead. I think it packs a little better (for me) and I can't see changing to skins since I like the bag so much. However, I'm planning on making some skins out of bug netting for my tarp. The nice thing about the bag is you can use the stuff sack you already have with some very minor tweaks.

some like them better than others. i still like them, especially for tarps.
snake skins (or skins) are a great thing to have on a tarp to protect it from the ground (mud, sticks) while putting it up & taking it down.
if the wind is blowing, you can tie the tarp ridge lines to the trees & make adjustments & the skins keep the tarp from going crazy in the wind while you do this.
and they work great in the same way for hammocks as well. just be sure the skins's are big enough to fit over any extras you may want to leave in place when you pack up... like under quilts.
hennesy hammocks has a patent on them so they are only available up to a certain size, but they are easy to make if you decide you want some bigger ones.
i know of one or two that have made skins big enough to easily slide over the hammock w/ under quilt & the top quilt inside. that way when they tie up the hammock & slide the skins back, bed's ready<g>.
another option that's become pretty popular for the hammock is the blackbishiop (BB) sack.
i'll find a link, or you can go to jeff's home page & find it in the hammock or the home made gear section.
here it is http://www.tothewoods.net/HomemadeGearBlackbishopSack.html

I'm a big fan of Snake skins. I use two pair one for the hammock and once for the tarp. They came in really hand while breaking camp outside of Harper's Ferry durring a thunder storm

Just wish I could find a longer snake skin that would cover the whole tarp when it is hung.

So which HH snakeskin would be the correct size for a 9 x 9 "Neo" tarp?

Definitely a #3 would do comfortably, possibly a #2 would be a closer fit (I've never owned a #2, so I'm not sure). hth

I dunno if it is the easiest, but JustJeff's page about them (http://www.tothewoods.net/HomemadeGearHammockTubes.html) is fairly simple.

I have some extra noseeum netting left over from my bug bivy. Gonna make me some skins for my GG 9x9 tarp. Thanks for the suggestion.

Here's a tutorial I put together not long ago on making mesh snake skins (http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1408).

I have a HH Hyperlight with the Super Shelter and pad. I thought about using skins to help compress and pack the entire set up and to keep it out of the dirt during set up. I called Hennessy to find out which size to use and they say they don't recommend using skins with the Supersheltr attached. Does anyone use skins like this?

I have packed the SS undercover and underpad in the largest set of skins HH has. It's kinda tight but do-able. That was with the HH Exped so the Hyperlight might compress a little smaller and fit better.

I can't comment on using skins with the super shelter in particular, but a lot members here do use snake skins that will hold a hammock and a under quilt. I don't see why you couldn't use them with the super shelter.

If you were going to use skins you would probably have to make some bigger ones to fit the super shelter and the hammock.

I think that recommendation is strictly related to the underpad. If you go to the trouble of removing the underpad and compressing it in a stuff sack, then the rest of the supershelter, and stock tarp or even a MacCat deluxe if you want, will fit into the #4 skins. I think the main thing is that Tom figures it is just more convenient to not take anything apart once you have the SuperShelter put together, so he just takes the whole thing, leaving the sleeping bag in the hammock/supershelter, and stuffs it as one unit into his pack.

Stoikurt, so apparently no problem with OCF underpad damage from stretching when folding the skins up? I think someone once mentioned that might be a concern, at least theoretically.

Is anyone else having trouble loading JustJeff's website? It keeps timing out for me. I know it worked last week.

I still use snakeskins, but I would like to switch to the bb sack. Just been too lazy.

Thanks for the advice. I'm thinking of making a Bishop Bag from an old stuff sack to pack the hammock and super shelter in and keeping the sleeping bag in a seperate stuff sack. I tried stuffing the entire set up including the sleeping bag into my pack but it's just too large and unmanagable.

I don't really know the answer to that. I've only done it a few times. I've changed to using an underquilt. If you plan on using skins full time with a lot of usage I would make some bigger skins so pad has a little more room to stretch without the compression stress of the tighter skins.
