ShakeyLeggs 10-11-2006, 11:45 I agree that is a sweet tarp. I have to toot my own horn here. On saturday Michele from WB told me about a MacCat Deluxe that came up for sale. Thinking I might have gotten in to late I went ahead an emailed the owner anyhow. To my surprise the tarp had not been sold. So as soon as the snailmail gets my MO to the owner and returns my new tarp I will be the proud owner of a MacCat Deluxe. I was thinking that with Brian away at school I would have to wait until he gets up and running to get one or I would have to order a HH Hex. I will post a report as soon as I get chance to use it.

The only draw back to the MacCat's design that I do not like is that it requires 4 stakes to stake it out.

I have to agree with you. That was one of my concerns when I decided I wanted more coverage than my stock HH tarps for my ULBA and Expeda. I looked at many tarps and came to the comclusion that the MacCat and the HH Hex gave me more coverage and usable space under the tarp. The big deciding factor for me was the usable space under the tarp.

:D another draw back it dont come in camo lol:cool: neo
Just Jeff 10-11-2006, 12:10 That's not such a drawback as an advantage to some... :D
I don't know why, but I like olive drab gear and not camo gear. Like my latest down hammock:

I looked a lot of tarps too before I got the Jacks R Better tarp. I wanted one with a lots of space under it. I own a regular MacCat and found out that I liked it but it really seemed to be smalled then the stock tarp that came with my hammock. So I was concerned that the Deluxe would not be much better. They other thin that convinced me was that it is faster to set two states up in the rain then 4 and carrying two stakes is lighter then carrying 4.
I am not saying the MacCat Deluxe is a bad tarp. It may be a great one. I was just scared to make the plunge because I was not impressed with the MacCat regular when comparing it to the stock tarp that my hammock came with.
I would like to hear a report once you get it telling us how you like it.

ShakeyLeggs 10-11-2006, 12:32 JustJeff posted a picture of TBacks tarp tie out from the recient SEHHA campout in Hot Springs. H uses one stake to tie out the side of his nomaly 2 stake tieout tarp. I am thinking of giving this a go and seeing if I can get it to work with my MacCat. Here is a link to Jeff's SEHHA picture page. It is on there.

ShakeyLeggs 10-11-2006, 12:38 Neo only one problem with that camo set up.
It doesn't work
I can still see it. :D
But seriously looks like a sweet setup.
Just Jeff 10-11-2006, 12:38 Hrm...never thought about how that tie-out system would work with the MacCat. Let us know how it works!

Will do. I am concerned that it will make the center of the side loose though but I will see what I can come up with.
Just Jeff 10-11-2006, 12:44 Yep - that's where I think the weakness would be. Changing the length of the loop might help some. Experiment with it - and be sure to take pics!
I guess the homemade gear section would be a good place to post it - it's homemade mod, which is close enough. Unless you have a website or something to post it on.

You will not have to worry about that from my experience with the standard MacCat. That is the one good thing about the MacCat is that the center and the sides stay tight as with the others they do not.
txulrich 10-11-2006, 13:32 I have a MC Deluxe and I love it. My primary camping is with scouts so carrying 4 stakes is not an issue, even if they are real heavy to get throught the rocks here:D
I have some plastic stakes that weigh next to nothing. I plan on using them when I section Georgia next year.
I put the hammock tie outs on 2 of the tarp stakes. When the temps are warmer, I tie one side up to catch the breeze. For scouts, that gives me a covered area to sit my lawn chair and cooler:)
ShakeyLeggs 10-11-2006, 13:58 Right now I am using the aluminum stakes I got with my Kelty Crestone 1 but in the very near future will be getting some titanium stakes. Also will be using Kelty Trptease lightline. And the JrB self tensioning tarp tieouts.
headchange4u 10-11-2006, 14:31 I knew it wouldn't take long for Neo to start a thread about the GG tarp.:D
I own the 9x9 version and I really love it. It's a fantastic tarp for the price.

I am going to buy the 12x12. Not much weight difference between it and the 9x9

I think the 12x12 would be a little large for me. I debated for a while before buying the tarp and I figured that the 9x9 would allow for more choices in sites to setup. Sometimes it's even a little hard to find a spot for my 9x9 when I do backcountry camping and I am out in the bush with lots of plant ground cover.
I am going to buy the 12x12. Not much weight difference between it and the 9x9 plus i need the extra room my 2 hiker honeys
:D good for you dude:cool: neo
I've been using a 8x10 silnylon from Campmor. When staked out with 2 on each side, there is some sag in the middle so I use my poles to raise the edge and get better views and breeze.
Just Jeff 10-11-2006, 21:32 That's a great way to increase your views while removing the sag from the tarp. Here's a pic of T-BACK's tarp in Hot Springs last weekend.

One side of the tarp is flopped over this side, but you can see how the pole is supporting the center of the long side.
ShakeyLeggs 10-11-2006, 22:32 That is the configuration I am going to try with my MacCat.
nchiker467 10-13-2006, 18:36 neo, i also bought one of those camo tarps . its a great tarp saved me like $70
FanaticFringer 11-03-2006, 23:32 Got my "NEO" 9X9 tarp today. This thing is killer. Neo deserves royalty checks from SG.
The little plastic sliders on the guidlines are cool. Will let me place my stakes at any length without tying a knot.
That is the configuration I am going to try with my MacCat.
Hey ShakeyLeggs, did you ever try the 2-stake configuration w/the MacCat deluxe tarp? I didn't pay attention in Hot Springs and don't quite understand what I'm seeing in the pic.
If you do it, please take lots of pics up close so I can try it too. thank!
blackbishop351 11-04-2006, 05:22 Yeah I'd like to see that too - I sat and tried to figure out how that would work, but everything I came up with seemed like it would introduce a lot of sag. Doesn't seem like a good thing, since the cat tarps are designed specifically to get RID of sag....

I gave it a quick go on my trip last month with no success. But then again I was just testing my set-up. The single stake configuration induced allot of sag in the middle of the tarp. I am planning on trying to work thru this and come up with a workable solution. I will keep everyone up to speed on how it works out.
