What Thermarest pad in particular are you referring to? Thermarest also makes the Ridgerest which is a CCF.

I had great results mixing the two...a 20+ year-old ThermaRest and an Oware pad (shhhh...it was on the ground, not hangin':o ). I folded the Oware along its long axis and inserted the ThermaRest taco-style. The combination provided great padding with no pressure points, good insulation, and there was no slipping; either between the pads or of my own body sliding off the combination.

A huge improvement for the small cost of adding the Oware's 7oz.

I use both together they have gotten me down to 15 so far.

I use two 3/8" CCF, one ensolite and one walmart special and last night was about 18.

On some of the inflatalbe pads you need to give an extra breath or 2 to completely inflate. On my big agnus pad that I have to blow up I had the valve freeze and ice form in the foot end from the mosture in my breath.

ccp make great sit pads for breaks and around camp. Unless you already have it or want something for the ground too I would give the cheap ccp a try first.

I already have the self inflator- and several ccf pads- was hoping to only carry one or the other-not both.......

Some of the lite series of Thermarests have half the open cell foam insulation of the regular ones...that's why they're lighter. It's basically sections of the OCF cut out, so it still self-inflates but doesn't insulate as well. That has more impact for hammockers since we have air blowing underneath us.

You can see the Thermarest display at some REIs for the cutout pattern.

Doesn't mean TRs don't work well, just something to keep in mind - the lite series won't insulate as well as the heavier models. But if you already have it, it's certainly a good piece to work into your overall plan! And a more comfortable backup option for going to ground if you need to.
