Review of $50 camping kit
Folks, I'd like to do a quick review of this kit. I was the lucky winner of the BIAS Facebook.com contest for their free silver Weight Weenie (they made 2), and I got one in the mail a couple of weeks ago. To my disappointment, we got a little more snow here in Buffalo and so I didn't have a chance to run out and put it up.
Opening the package, I found that everything was bundled nicely in the pouch that it came in. I pulled out the hammock; this is a silver/grey ripstop nylon gathered-end hammock. Very soft material, and very nice build quality.
Having come from a Hennessy, the first thing that I had to do was figure out the toggles. Several minutes on the BIAS site, along with some time with Shug (on the knot, NOT on the toggle), and I was good to go to set up the hang.
I put up the straps (super long, not like the ones from the HH at all), and set the toggles in place. The next thing that I realized was that I had no idea what to do with the adjustable ridge line. This took a little more research and measuring (83%), but once I had that figured out I made the necessary adjustments to the toggle placements and put the hammock back up with the ridge line. That totally made the difference with the hang, and allowed for a comfortable diagonal lay, even considering the closeness of the hang points (I don't have any trees in my little back yard, so I hung from the kids' treehouse that I built for them instead).
This thing is really really roomy! After letting all 3 kids test it (this took much of the afternoon), I got a chance to settle down for a little while in the hammock. Very comfortable, very well built, and very light weight considering the size of the hammock. Of course, now I have to figure out if I want to get a tarp and some kind of bug protection and replace the HH with the WW when I go hiking. Darn the consequences!
