Before I get started:
Thanks for welcoming me to your community! I really enjoy the warm receptions members bestow on newbs like me. I feel welcome, to say the least.
This is my first DIY hammock project. I have completed some ground dweller projects in the past but nothing with a hang. I have spent considerable time lurking and viewing youtube videos on how to go about my first UQ construction.
Below is a work in progress, I will be editing and adding to this thread as I work to complete my quilt. I will be posting updates as the work progresses, accompanied by pictures and videos. My purpose for making this project public is two fold; First, so members are able to comment and correct. You won't hurt my feelings. If you have an idea please post and let me know. Second, so others, new members and vets can learn and share in this experience with me.

STEP ONE: Order the supplies and gather tools
I chose to order my supplies from www.diygearsupply.com. sclittlefield is a member here and I believe he runs the site. Shipping was quick, price was great and he had everything I needed to get started. Thanks man! (if your reading).
Here is what I ordered:
-8 yds - 1.1oz/yd, ripstop nylon, calendared, downproof, forest green (I know I won't need this much but I always like extra supplies) http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/p...ictureid=11246
A few notes:
I measured myself for the dimensions of this quilt. If you decided to build one I would strongly recommend you size your quilt to your body size. I am 6'2" 210lbs this 3/4 quilt will hopefully fit me perfectly.
The overall dimension of the quilt is 60" x 48" x 4". I have built in a slight taper so that it hugs the bottom of the hammock better and also eliminates weight/width where I don't need it, at the head and legs. As you can see the taper at the head end is more drastic. The loft of the quilt will hopefully be between 4-5 inches with 8 baffles 6" wide. I am also accounting for a slight reduction in overall size in the finished quilt. People say it always happens (I am guessing because of stitch gather). So I expect a finished size of 58"x47".
I will need to alter the cuts for each side of the shell to account for baffle height and seam allowance. (thanks Mad777. You can find his project here.) Think of a pillow. How if both shells are cut the same when you lay the pillow down the seem is in the center of the loft. I don't want that. So I am cutting the ground side (or the side that faces down) larger so that the seam of the quilt is near the hammock when in place.
The hammock side of shell (or the side that faces up) will measure 51"x63" that is a base of 48"x60" plus a 3" seem allowance. The ground side of the shell (or the side that faces down) will be 55"x67". That is a base 48"x60" plus a 3" seem allowance and 4" for the baffle height.
If you search the forums you can find many people who have calculated the down needed for a project. The formula is fairly simple. (L"xW"xH")/Fill Rating = oz needed. I am going to need just a under 14 oz of 800 fill for this quilt. I think I am going to purchase 16 oz and overstuff. (or save some for later)

I am for sure going to keep my eye on this. I am in the planning stages of making a UQ myself. Thanks for posting this up for the folks like me.

I could be wrong but if you want to have 4in baffles then you need to add 8 inches to the outside fabric. Four inches for each side/end.
