Has anyone considered tying actual knots in their webbing? I realize (having been a climber) that it weakens the rated strength of the webbing, but we aren't using it to arrest a screaming fall either.
In any event, comment away with reasons (cosmetic or otherwise) for/against knots.
Absolutely nothing wrong with knots. I started off Ray Mears style, with an Evenk on the tree end and a simple quick release overhand knot on the hammock end. I've since upgraded to whoopie slings for the convenience and weight savings, but I had no issues whatsoever with my knotted web (besides the fact that I was a dummy and bought nylon instead of polyester.)
Everybody does it. Well, almost everybody. The marlinspike hitch is used extensively with whoopie slings. For a loop, a figure eight on a bight will serve you well. It ain't pretty, but then, pretty is as pretty does...;)
For: NO SEWING! (big deal if, like me, you have no machine) And they're less permanent so more versatility in your setup.
Against: A knot is going to use more strap length then a sewn loop. For a 2in loop you are probably only going to need about 3in of extra strap to fold over and sew to make the loop. With a knot you are going to eat up alot more strap length to get a loop the same size. More weight, more material to buy...
A 1in polyester strap has a break strength of 3800 lbs. (figure from strapworks) so even with knots you have alot of wiggle room for derating their strength. Hang safely.
3800 lbs... I like that. It makes me feel safe!:D
I used to use ratchet straps for my suspension, and I've had a factory sewn loop fail, but I've never had a loop that I tied in fail on me, and I'm a pretty heavy dude.

I used to carry straps with just a single loop. The other end went through ring buckles on the hammock end. I've done what I can to avoid the need for knots.
