Knots for stakes
Assuming you don't use a tensioner, knot bone, or some other gadget, what knots do you guys like for your stakes?
I see a lot of mention of the marlin spike for this.
After reading Jardine's book, I always use a clove hitch.
Like a marlin spike, once you slip the stake you, you can tug and it will untie itself.
I think they may actually be the same knot just tied differently, at least they are both a bit inside another bite.
Its also not far from being a constrictor knot, but not quite.

My preference is from tarp to stake back to tarp for a 3 to 1 then tautline hitch. This gives me both the ability to apply a lot of tension and is easily adjustable.

I always use a taunt line hitch. This knot allows the lines to be tightened by sliding the knot.

Marlinspike for me......

I use the marlin spike myself.

Nice contribution on the pile hitch, Red.

Another vote for tautline hitch. The ability to adjust tension cannot be overstated.

Ohhhh I like the looks of that pile hitch, I'll have to play with it.
How easy is it to undo?
I'm using gutter nails which are textured, so I'm not going to be able to easily slide any knot off the stake.
The adjustable knots seem overkill to me. I just guesstimate how long I need the line for the pitch I want and press the stake into the ground. Nothing to adjust except where you drive the stake in.
When I can, i just use the fixed eye I spliced in the end of the guy lines so I don't need any knot at all. Maybe there's situations I haven't run into yet though.
