DuctTape, that's an awesome map you've put together there. I took some photos there today at some of the sites I thought were good for a group hang. If I can work out how I will post them to your map.

And other place to camp would be North Lake. You take 28 north and get off at the forestport and go past the Buffalo head restraint and say left on North Lake road and then you will come to the town of Atwell camping is on the left be for the brig. It will be less driving for people coming from Rochester way.
I don't think we will get snow on that weekend if we did by some chance it would not be that much and gone by noon in my eyes. Now i just jinxed us LOL
Yeah, I can't imagine it being a problem with snow. I'm just concerned the rangers will kick us out if they find us there without chains or 4WD.
I like the sound of Atwell. It will be less of a drive than if we went up near Saranac. Is the camping area a private campground or is it state land? I drove down Indian Lake today on the way to Speculator, the state campground there is beautiful, some of the sites are right on the Lake, but the place closes on Oct 9. There were a bunch of state campgrounds south of Speculator too, but they were already closed for the year.
No this is state land and the camp sits are numbered and you go pick your site and then go to a Hut like thing lol and put it down on a log. If you have the ADK books it is in the West-Central region. For hiking there is on trail that come right to the camping area. Trail 101. But at the end of the lake there is a big parking area and there is a lot of unmarked trails out that way that i have not been on in a long long time.
If you go to Atwell keep on to South Lake. I used to ski out of a private cabin up there. I was told the state put in a better parking lot. As I recall there is an informal road up the West side that might let a group slide in off the road and set up a camp.
For the record, that map is not mine. I cannot take credit for it.
There are quite a few drive up sites int he Black River Wild Forest (which North Lake Rd runs through). It is also a popular hunting area too. I think you will find most drive up sites popular during the hunting months.
Just to play it safe i will call the forest ranger for that area and see what he says. I will let you know what i find out to tomorrow.
Thanks for doing that.
I was thinking Moss Lake at Eagle Bay might be good too.
