Pictures of WBBB and Superfly in Porch Mode

Thought I would share some pics of my WBBB 1.1 DL from my most recent camping trip with the Boy Scouts on the Tallapoosa River here in Alabama.

I have the Super Fly set up in porch mode with a Grand Trunk Ultra Light serving as a gear hammock. Lines are self tensioning using shock cord with Zing-It. The SF is attached to a continuous ridge line with prussiced soft shackles and tied off using a knot bone on one end and a figure 9 on the other end ala' Opie.

That's one sweet looking rig. As for suggestions, I would suggest getting out more often! :lol: But seriously, make any converts?

Already a few hangers in the troop but I am the only Warbonnet guy. Most use ENO's and crap straps and there are couple Hennessy users too. Teenage boys go for whatever is the least (apparent) work. I show them the error of their ways particularly as they sag further and further toward the ground. :scared:

I'm liking the idea of the second gear hammock. Do you use tree straps for it? Do you ever find yourself sitting on you pack while in the hammock?

For the gear hammock it has woopie slings with 6 foot tree straps that I tie marlin spike hitches. This is certainly overkill for a gear hammock but I also use the GTUL as hammock on different occasions. If all i did was hang gear in it the tree straps wouldn't be necessary.

On to the second question. I don't find myself sitting on my pack. The webbing suspension on the WBBB does not stretch much if at all and I weigh 215. i leave a good foot to 18 inches between the bottom of the WBBB and the top of the GTUL and it has not been a problem.

Dam, right now I am regreting not ordering the superfly. That setup was soooo nice ;)

I ordered my first WB BB 1,7 DL May 1st. Hope they will soon send it. Guess I will be mailing them now hopeing they can trow a Superfly inn with the hammoc. ;)

I would like to take the credit for thinking of a gear hammock but I picked the idea up here on HF. Jacks-R-Better sells gear hammocks (others may as well) that are not full sized hammocks like the one I used.

This was a "truck in" camping trip so weight was not an issue but I do carry it when backpacking. The GTUL with straps + whoopies weighs in at 14.5oz. Just for reference the gear hammock sold by JRB is less than 4 oz.

I've got a nano-7 that might just be perfect for this. only 7 oz and packs down to the size of a grapefruit.

I have the same setup (minus the gear hammock). I considered getting a lighter tarp, but, honestly, I LOVE the room. Set up in porch mode, its like your own little world. Every time I consider going ultralight with a tarp, I think of all that extra space I have-and stick with the Superfly :)

Great minds here have come up with much more efficient ridgeline attachments and guyline tieouts.
I used to use the knotbone and figure 9 like you, until I discovered the Dutch Flyz and then began studying what people here were working out for ease of adjustment, speed and efficiency and the above video and comments were a real eye opener for me, so I'll pass it on to you and anyone else to consider. It's really works great. Study it then enjoy!

Thanks for the tip. I will put Dutch Flyz on the shopping list. Looks like they are easy to use. Currently I have the figure 9 prussiced to the CRL so I can do very similar adjustment as shown in the video. Then I can adjust the position of the tarp along the CRL using the soft shackles prussiced the CRL and attached to each end of the tarp.

My tie outs are a little different. I have Zing-It loops tied via prussics along the guy lines then put stakes through the loop. Very easy adjustment. At the tarp end I use loops of shock cord with the zing-it larks headed to them for simple self tensioning system.

Love this setup!! Also love the idea of the gear hammock. Im wondering if a weather protector would work in the same way. Like the one from 2QZQ. Im going to order one anyway and just might experiment. Thanks for the pics. Happy Hangin!!

I am looking at buying a superfly and emailed Brandon recently as to see what the best ridge line set up was. He recommended to me that it is best to tie out from each end of the tarp to the tree rather then going over or under with a crl because it takes to much tension off the seam. Looks like the crl is working fine for you though. I wonder it Dutch stingerz would work well with this recommendation.

I can add/release tension plus adjust location of the tarp along the CRL using the soft shackles attached at each end of the ridge seam that are prussiced to the CRL. So I can pull it as tight as if I was not using a CRL. Clear as mud?:confused: If a picture would help I will post one.

I like the CRL for hanging stuff from but it certainly is not necessary.

Several Dutchified things are on my list to try.

Thanks bamabert. I do understand your set up on the crl. I assumed this would be the best way to hang it as well but Brandon from Warbonnet said it was best to hang it the other way. Maybe because even though you can pull it tight with your soft shackles it might not be the same as having some of the load on the crl vs all of the load on the seam of the tarp? Chew.

Let's see if we can get Brandon to clarify.

Brandon, what about the SF ridge seam benefits from having it tied at both ends and pulled taught versus using a CRL?

That looks very similar to my hammock setup. My poles are bamboo though.
