Great trip report Bearpaw ... as always ....
Nice hike, My first real backing trip was on the foothills trail with my son a few years ago. It's still my favorite place to hike. Looks like you had a great time glad you shared it with us.
Great trip report! I definitely will be hiking the CRT this summer---I've known about it for years, but have never been on it. Looks like a great place for a summer hike! One question, If you wanted to take a low milage overnight, what section of the CRT would you recommend? Are there any sections that have a save place to swim? Thanks!
If you want to swim, the SC portion along the CRT and Bartram Trail (GA border at SC-28 to the Foothills Trail) would be a good bet. About 4 miles each way. You will hike along the edge of a ridge above the river for about 2 miles, then you drop down to one excellent site after another. The image with the rope swing and the rock-cliners is along that portion. The Chattooga is still small enough it is not so dangerous as portions in GA where signs discourage swimming. You also get to enjoy a couple of waterfalls as you join the FHT.
Thanks for the advice Bear Paw!
that place at the rope swing has an excellent swimming hole. If you wanted a real short hike in. yo could park at Nichoson ford rd. Its only about a mile and a quater from the parking area. Once you get to Pigpen falls go across the footbridge over lick log creek (to the right if you are facing pigpen falls) and follow the trail untill you see the swing on your right (that site gets really popular in the throws of summer).

What a great trip report. I really enjoyed your narrative. I'm planning to thru hike the CRT this summer. Are there any nice sites along the section south of US-28 on the GA side before you get to Earl's Ford? Based on my initial planning, I will probably need to end one day about half way between US-28 and Earl's Ford.
Much appreciated!
Did the FHT last may from oconee sp to table rock .this Brings back memories :) by far the most pleasurable hike of my life . My favorite section is white water falls through Thompson river gorge to the town @rocky bottom.
Don't know how I missed this trip report.
Looks like another great trek with Dewey was had.
