Hi All
I have found some light weight nylon which is a car cover and is supposed to be water resistant.
It is only $25 and and suits a large a car so I would get a lot of the material.
I have held it up and tried to blow and suck air through it but none would pass through.
Would this material be water proof? if I take it home is there an easy way to test it before I cut it up.
I plan to make a cat cut tarp out of it mostly for summer as I have my neo 9x9 for wet conditions.

Generally I find that as long as you are not touching the fabric you stay reasonably dry in light rain so as a tarp it might be ok even if it is only water resistant. I'd be hitting it with a hose to see if anything sprays through for those nasty storms that spring out of nowhere.
BTW was this from a chainstore that might be available in NSW? I wish we had Silnylon available in Oz!
you can test it with your shower head too.

My father_in_law has one over his Falcon and it looked way big enough to cut a decent sized tarp out of with enough left over for stuff sacks.
If you stick the fabric down into a bucket and fill the bucket about halfway up, then gather the fabric and pick the "ball" of water up, you'll know whether it is waterproof (doesn't leak), or DWR (water slowly weeps through the fabric but the fabric doesn't darken and soak). If the fabric instantly looks "wet" it has no water repellant finish at all.

I picked up my car cover last night and found that it is nylon taffeta and looks to be very light weight.
I took it out the back today for a bucket test and filled it with two litres of water. I picked up the water in the nylon and saw that it held the water very well and it was not until I pushed down on the water to try and force it through the nylon that small beads of water began to appear.
I squeezed even more and was able to force some water through and after a while I had a little drip going. Most of the water was small beads.
So I think it will make a great two season tarp and I hope to start cutting tomorrow. this thing is huge by the way and I could get two tarps out of it for $25 :)

Not to mention how big this thing is, it's huge. I had it over our family sized trampoline to dry and it covered the tramp with maybe another 6 foot at one end. I measured my hammock and think I will make the tarp 11 foot long and will have heaps of material left over, all for $25
