I have a Pathfinder 1, by Blind Horse Knives, the only knife you'll ever need.
You can buy Mora's cheap and their very available . Not much investment and they do surprisingly well. My Frost/Mora is my go to knife these days and i do everything with it. I don't do allot of batoning but it will do it just fine.
I have a EESE (Rat) RC-4 back in Ontario, but I was looking around locally and found a 4" SOG Seal Pup for $25, good size, great price (came with a fabric/seatbelt sheath). I thought it would do fine. Thanks for all the tips though; honestly I miss the Rat4.
My 'goto' folder has a chisel grind, and as I found out the painful way is kinda dangerous to baton with. The Seal Pup should fill the niche nicely.
+1 on the Mora's.
Very inexpensive, and extremely durable with proper care.
I've batoned with mine when needed, but don't typically have to use a knife for this all that much. The only time I find myself needing to split wood is the rare occasion that I can't find sufficient kindling or intermediate pieces to start the fire off.
If you're going to be walking a trail during the day, keep your eyes open and gather your tinder/kindling as you go, well before you hit the designated campsites that most people clean out so quickly.
Another good trick is to bundle dried grass when you can't find twigs or small pieces for the intermediate part of starting your fire. Use loose grasses in your tinder bundle, but twist ropes of dried grass to use as the intermediate fuel to ignite the bigger stuff.
Next time, just go to walmart. They have one of the best low cost survival blades, the buck 119 special. Les stroud used it, and that is good enoughf or me.
