I have a shell that I just got, but it wasn't intended for serious outdoor use. It is some kind of water-resistant nylon that has a huge cotton embroidered patch on the back of it. The jacket works great in rain, but water gets in through that seam. What kind of seam sealer works when put on cotton?
Silnet works great. I've used it for patches on backpacks. It's works great for any sealing that I have needed...
McNett Seamgrip works well on all kinds of stuff.
Either Seamgrip or Silnet depending on what the coating on the nylon is.
Test one on an inconspicuous area first to see if it grips when dry.
If I were a betting man, I'd suggest trying Silnet first...
First, what sax is that?
Second, cotton don't seam seal very well. Try tar.
Edit: Actually, as others suggested, I'd try silnet first. How big is the embroidered patch? You might consider trying to seal it on the outside, to keep the cotton from getting wet at all.

The patch takes up the entire back of the jacket. There's nylon underneath it, so I'm not too worried about sealing the entire patch, just the seam.
You might consider spraying the patch with something like "Camp Dry" also. I would think that the patch itself would wick water once it gets soaked???

It does, but when there's driving rain, it goes straight through the seams, mostly at the corners.
The picture clears some things up. You say seam, and I have to guess that the patch is attached only at the perimeter. I'd still suggest any good seam sealer on the inside, and perhaps even taping that seam. Any water-resistant stuff you can apply to the outside will help a bit.
Or, you can always remove the patch, and sew something on with more Carolina blue in it.:lol::lol::lol:

You are correct that the patch is attached just on the perimeter. The problem with putting a seam sealer on the inside is that there is a cotton lining on the inside of the jacket.
And removing that patch...not a chance :cool:
