Is 3/4" CCF too thick for a pad?

At work today, we began the installation of two huge outdoor digital LED signs. They were shipped standing face-to-face on a pallet with several large pieces of white CCF between them. Of course I threw the foam in my truck instead of the dumpster . . . :shades:

I'm wondering if 3/4" is too thick? Most references to pads on this forum are 1/4 ~ 1/2". I understand this would take a little more space when packed, but I typically bikepack with a trailer, so it won't be quite as critical for me as it might be for others.

I joined two pieces with duct tape, and cut it into a shape that seemed to work for my dbl-layer DIY hammock. Ended up about 25" wide x 80" long with the opposing corners trimmed off to "encourage" the pad to fit on the diagonal. These pics show the shape I came up with. Yes, I put it between the layers to lay on it, and yes, I lay backwards-diagonal from most folks.

Although I've never used pads before, I thought I'd give this a try - Hey, IT WAS FREE, right ?!? Occasionally, I've noticed cold spots on my butt or lower back with my IX UQ, so maybe this will be my ultra-cold weather insulation option! I spent about an hour on it tonight in a very cold garage, and it definately bounces the heat back! It's stiffer of course than no pad, but was still very comfortable.

Just wondering if I'm off the "deep" end with this idea (pun intended :lol:)

If it fits your need for warmth and comfort, and doesn't go over your pack volume or weight limits, then I would keep it! More thickness generally = more warmth.

The price was right, too!

Unless that is a double layer hammock you will proabably have some issues with the pad shifting. I would think that pad would be geared more towards car camping.

He mentioned it goes between the layers.

You got a trailer so space is a non issue. I would use it for sure. I take my 1/2 inch pad along on my trailer just so I can use it on my cot if I get stuck on the ground.

Have you tried this with your UQ? The last time I was in my WBBB I put a 3/8" pad (walmart ccf) in the dual layer, and my jarbidge underneath. The 3/8" seemed to conform around me enough to allow the underquilt to still fit well. I'm curious if the 3/4" would be too dense to allow the same?

Yeah, it's a dbl-layer hammock, and the pad seems to stay in place pretty well.

I thought about maybe rolling it around the outside of a stuff sack - that way it's rolled more loosely, plus there's no dead space in the center of the roll.

No I haven't, but had wondered the same thing . . .
It's just that I don't think I'll still need the UQ since the pad's 3/4". I do use a full sock which completely stops drafts & breezes.

Looks hard,,, when I was using a pad it was 1/4 EVA, softer. you will just have to experiment to find out what works for you...

I'd call it a hammock futon))))))
