Heres a bizarre question for you, with webbing, or amsteel, does it matter what direction the load is applied? For example, in a hammock suspension, if webbing is used with a spreader bar it will have side load put on it, in addition to the regular stress of a hammock suspension. Does this affect the load rating of the strap? (or amsteel) Would it be more likely to fail with a side load? :confused:
The direction of the load does come into play, but the scenario you described shouldn't be problem. The math gurus will have to correct me if I'm wrong, but I think a spreader bar deflects the direction of force, but doesn't add to it.
Side loading would only be an issue if it where push or shear through the webbing. Which is where the suspension hardware comes in to divert that side load or shear stress into the tenisle stress that flows allong the webbing where it is strongest. Atleast that is how I understand it.
I would think that with as little load as I assume you're putting on the webbing and whoopies that it shouldn't matter but I'm just a noob so I'll let the pros give you a fully fledged answer.
