LA/MS area
Greetings all,
I am sort of new to this. I say sort of because as a kid, I used to play in an old Navy hammock and rigged a tarp over to shelter from rain. Never could get a decent mosquito net devised. Therefore I have had some rudimentary involvement.
A couple of years ago, I was posted on Guam and camped on the beach in a Guatemalan hammock between coconut trees. I had a heavy tarp - not so much for the rain, but to not get hit with falling coconuts! The wind was so heavy that bugs were not a problem. This was fun there, but not so practical here.
Since getting back to this side of the world, I have been looking at getting something worth using when either hunting or motorcycling.
My other hobby is hunting with traditionally styled (sidelock) muzzleloaders so having a portable shelter appeals to me. I am often in the woods solo.
I am sure that every new member wants to know what to buy and the more that I look and read, the less that I really am sure what to get. But I will buy or make something before long. I am over 6 ft and lean and live in the South. I plan to camp from motorcycles; truck or might bicycle.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I see there is a hang in my old stomping grounds near Alexandria, LA. Might be the final push to get me to move on this project.
Thanks,
RT

Welcome from Mobile, You will love it here too. It is the ticket on warm summer nights when being in a tent is miserable.

Another Bama hanger checking in to say: "Welcome to HF". I recommend that you go to the hang and see all of the different rigs people will have. It is well worth the trip.

Well hello neighbor. How is the hammock hunting going so far. Lots of brands out there and lots to learn but it is all here to be found.
Welcome to the cult I mean club and hope to see you at the WAT hang.

Everyone,
Thanks for all the welcome messages!
Havens 71,
I lived near Tioga years ago, so I know your area. I think that Tunk's would be the nearest place to eat and drink near the camp. The only place with decent fried alligator. I likely worked with people that you know out at England AirPark. I shot with the Bayou Muzzleloaders at the Woodworth range which is near the other end of the trail where you are camping. Hope to meet you.
Jazilla,
Still contemplating the hammock project. Was thinking of making one - I have SEWN my own items for historic reenactments, so that is not a big deal. I can handle the "stigma" of sewing things without a problem. But I see that the cost is not all that bad when compared to other hobbies. After all, one goal is to camp from the Harley. The first use was camping with my dive buddies on Guam.
Hennessey Explorer Deluxe Asym and Warbonnet Blackbird seem to be the ones that interest me at the moment. I would like to get something really cheap to go on a few trips an look at what others have. not afraid to spend to get a good rig, but only want to buy one once. Will likely make a few more to infect, or entice other family and friends. Besides, I see it as a challenge to climb that mountain.
Now Carencro is a nice area - near Lafayette. Had friends with horses there when I lived in Baton Rouge. Used to eat frog legs at Robin's in Henderson. And yes, I can pronounce it correctly.
Look forward to bumping into you into you as well.
