Kayak Strap hangers
Yesterday I stopped by a small store whose motto is "We are two small to carry junk." Turns out the guy working there is a hanger. I'd just gone to get a couple caribiners.
He is also a mountain climber. He said "Never attach like to like materials." There goes my idea to not use metal.
He suggested hanging with straps used for attaching kayaks to the roof of a car. The don't stretch at all, are very strong and easy to use. A 7 foot length is $5.95 and weighs 120 grams.
Loop it twice around the tree and attach the caribiner from the hammock to just one loop so the weight tightens the strap. It completely eliminates the minor slips of another strap on the tree, getting a bigger banana as nylon stretches, and little creaking from knots slipping. I use a structural ridgeline, but attach it after I hang the hammock and tighten it with a trucker's knot.
I'm still new at this, but this is the solution I'm going to go with for awhile. I do have a new tarp on the way.

My old way is on the other side.

I have a hammock I hang with the same kind of straps, however, my strap is run through the channel of the hammock. I just take the two open ends, wrap once on the tree and then buckle. I've also larksheaded a continuous loop through the channel and run the strap through the loop to attach. Again, no biner.
Sorry no pics so maybe it didn't really happen.

The straps that I have for my kayak slip too much for me to trust them for hanging. Do you have any concerns about that?
-
I have been using similar straps and cam locks since 09 and no problems at all.
-
I use the harbor freight version for my yard hammock (eno dn). I sawed the metal hooks off the ends off and they've been through at least 40 hangs w/no slips.

I would worry about the buckles, but i havent had one come loose on a kayak yet, so maybe they are ok.

1500 lbs!
That is what NRS rates their polypropylene straps (1") and cam-lock buckles at. I have used them to hang, and can vouch for their lack of stretch and strength, even though I did not apply the rated load.
As for other brands, I cannot ssay. NRS makes quality stuff !

The buckle slipping worried me too at the start but it's never failed me.
NRS is what I use too and have not had a problem in the 4 or 5 years I've used this set up.

Well, i guess i have some experimenting to do this weekend.
thanks for the idea

The straps I use are made by Rod Saver and are actually boat dock sraps.
The already have loops sewn on both ends and are black.
