Here it is: Stretch-Side Hammock Mod

Hey guys I had a bit of a crazy weight saving thought in regards to the hammock body and tarp setup.
Im thinking to save weight make the hammock from 1.1 Silnylon or similar, rig a 'tarp' of silnylon over the ridge line and attach the sides of the 'tarp' directly to the hammock body in a water tight manner then inside the hammock, if condensation is a worry rig some DWR nylon to let it drip off the sides.
This would also most likely in warm climates negate the need for much if not any top insulation and help with the bottom? Thoughts?
Excuse me if I am wrong, but Knotty's mod only changes the hammock sides and the sag of them so stuff doesn't come out like pillows and quilts, but doesn't affect the lay. To change the lay, you still need wider material on the bottom, so if you wanted the same lay as a footbox mod you would need a ~60" wide bottom compared to a 48" wide bottom with a 12" footbox added.
And the material of a footbox is ~.139 yards, at 1.1 ounces that would be 0.153 ounces added to the weight of a 48"x109" hammock (I also believe you can make the hammock shorter using a footbox for the same comfort) which is about 4 grams, and a 2' length of the lightest bungie I think would work for one side of Knotty's mod is also 4 grams. That excludes the weight of grossgrain loops on his or the re-enforcement patch on a footbox. So the weight of adding the mods is a wash, while to get a flat lay with a bungie mod will mean a bottom that actually has about 1 yard or more of body material.
Hey SGT Rock, big fan of your ghost! Thats where I got the inspiration for this from. Just to clarify, my title was a little misleading, Im aiming to have a very light hammock but im willing to say add a small amount of weight to have a flatter lay etc.
As for the bivi experiment i have decided that I am not going to make a sil hammock instead im going to trial some 'micro tarps'/ covers with drop sheets, I plan to make them fit over the ridge line and leave room underneath the hammock for a UQ, similar to your hammock sock SGT Rock however obviously waterproof.
I figure you were willing to add some weight. I was just comparing what the two ideas weigh vs actually do. I think some folks think that the foot box would weigh more than a Knotty mod - which it doesn't, and that the two mods do the same thing - which they also do not.
I suggest you emulate the Hennessy diamond tarp for that if I understand you right. As to a waterproof sock, it sound very uncomfortable.
So ruling out Knottys mod how about a gathered side? How is it accomplished?
I don't know what a gathered side hammock is. I do know gathered end hammocks.
Haha, I mean how would i make a gathered 'footbox' similar to this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6mjv0wU9fM
Cool idea. I am not sure how much that would weigh, probably not much.
