Seems that thread lost luster....success stories in the field ?
In the lab we had success with the hard edged Dutch Biner....not with a smooth aluminum descender ring.
At this point I love the 'metalic' whoopie but for reliability it seems like longevity of the whoopie is given up---how much is hard to tell BUT I've been replacing whoopies that are used regularly at least yearly, so in the end it may be a moot point.
Stories? Thoughts?
I followed that thread closely and I've played with both the SRS and whoopies in the lab - and if I ever convert from web and buckles it will be to the SRS. But for the small weight difference and the addition of extra components I just can't bring myself to give up the web and buckles yet.

I tried it last night, in my basement, using SMC descender rings. Had no slips but that doesn't mean I'd trust my spine to it in the field just yet. Would be nice if someone could do some load testing.
My concern is that this system puts compression loads onto the Amsteel much like a knot and we know that Amsteel (Dyneema) doesn't do well with compression. Think about it, the bury in a whoopie or eye splice is several inches long, so the load is well dispersed. With the single line ring suspension the wraps cross the straight line three times, so the load is only distributed over 3 x 7/64", which is less than 1/3".
Is there damage to the whoopies that are degrading the fibers? Could you show us a picture?
This ^ is why I didn't go far with the SRS idea. It's a cool idea, but I'm satisfied so far either using whoopies, dispersing the load, or webbing and buckles/rings.Quote:

and if there was, making another set for like $15 would be , what I would consider, normal gear replacement after such usage. Heck. Osprey exchanged my pack for free with their great warranty, but I am SURE I could have gotten another 1000 mile or so out of it.

Not sure if your question is in response to what I wrote? What I'm saying is that whoopies and eye splices do a nice job of properly dispersing the compression load, so they don't damage the Amsteel. Knots, etc., concentrate loads and can cause problems with this type of line.Quote:

I have used it last four nites in the house on my hammock and love the ease of it, and the fact that I can take it all the way to the dutch beiner of the hammock suspension for closeness and 3 wraps works great for me. I dig this setup and have installed it on the wife's hammock as well using SMC Descending Rings from Whoopies.com that I had in a box for the past couple of years. Weight is 11g. each.
