Need Shock Cord - Quick!
I have a hike that I'm going on this weekend, and I have two friends that jumped on last minute. I need to fully equip them with hammock, tarp, UQ and TQ.
So....
Last night I took a Mountain Hardware down mummy bag, and turned it into an underquilt with the old Singer and a pair of Scissor and some Grosgrain. I need some shock cord to test hang it tonight for a shake down before I let anyone hit the trail with it.
Where can I find shock cord locally? Is this something Dicks Sporting Goods or JohAnne might have in stock?
Worst case I could just string it up with paracord or something to get them through this hike, but seeing as this is a first time hammock experience for these guys, I want it to be as best as I can be so as not to turn them off from hammocking in the future. Both of these guys are seriously considering Blackbirds or Switchbacks for future hikes.
TIA

Most fabric stores carry some kind of shockcord.
In a pinch like your in use what you got.
In the past, I used a part paracord, part bungee sytem with success. Loop the pc over the foot end. Loop the bungee over the head end. The two parts are tied to the quilt or tied together, even if inside a channeled uq. Just make a continous loop of pc/sc.
The shockcord/bungee will allow the quilt to flex.
Bungees are available pretty much any where. You might even have one laying around. Remove or tape off the hooks on the bungee, if they are the metal hooks.

Local outfitters carry it in my area. Not sure if you have anything like that by you. Not sure about ****'s either.
However, if you have a small amount of it on something else, you can make the UQ suspension 90% of regular cordage and 10% of shockcord cannibalized off something else - like a tarp tensioner so to speak. This would get the thing hung and also allow some give so as to not rip the grosgrain clear off the UQ when loaded.
Just a thought.

Thanks guys, the part para part shock is exactly what I"m going to do. I have like 2' of shock cord, that should be plenty to work this out.
Thanks for the idea!
I have another questions related to the same quilt since I have you guys attention.
I put a length of drawstring cord through the newly opened up foot box so I can draw string it to a nice curve to match the hammock shape. I've got some nice cord locks on each end to lock it down to shape...but I was also thinking of tying a fixed loop at the end of the draw string as both a lock stop, and a possible place to put a bungie or shock cord for suspension.
What kind of knot would I use to put a *fixed* loop in the draw string cord? I tried three or four basic knots (double overhand etc), but each one kept slipping when any pressure was put on it. I gave myself lots of extra cord, so I can tie just about any not to make this fixed loop.
Suggestions?
Edit To Add: Yes, I'll have photos up tonight. Pics or it didn't happen. :)
