Just wondered what the best knot to use to tie a loop in the end of some amsteel? It does need to take weight but I dont want it to be bulky. Would a single overhand loop do the job?

the knot will derate the amsteel almost 50%, like knots do with all type of rope... that is why splicing is preferred... but if you cannot or just don't want to splice then yes a knot will work assuming you have factored in a safety factor somewhere...
What are you using it for mate? As mentioned, splicing is the usual way
I will be using the loop to attach a dutch biner and then wrap the amsteel round a tree a few times and clip the biner back onto the amsteel, so it shouldnt be taking my whole weight.
This will be on my edc hammock, which will only be used as a chair when I go out walking, so will only be in use for half an hour at a time.
What sort of safety factor could I use or should I be ok for this use?
Splice the loop, you will be much happier with the end result. Not to mention reliable. Don't sit higher than you are willing to fall.
I agree...splice in a fixed eye with locked brummel.
Agree with everyone else, splicing is the way to go, it's not hard and looks extremely tidy compared to a knot.
Perfection Loop seems to fit the amsteel pretty well.
It's very strong on fishing line.
Thanks everybody. I was going to just use a double overhand loop. But will give splicing a try. As its only going to be used as a chair hammock, I'll make sure I'm quite low to the ground when testing!
I would suggest a strap to protect the tree...
