Second hammock underneath holding blanket?

I was out in the woods a few days ago and it was mighty cold and snowing. i strung up my tarp and hammock and had a blanket i was going to rig as an UQ. i was trying to figure out how, when i remembered i had a cheap walmart hammock in my bag. so i strung it up below my other hammock and put the blanket inside it and messed with it until it was snug against me while lying in my other hammock and it did a fantastic job keeping my butt warm. the second hammock made for a nice wind block too.

Anyone had experience doing this or any tips on how it could be developed into a good system?

That's basically what an underquilt is, it just combines the hammock and blanket portion all into one.

The problem I see with your method is risk of compressing the insulating layer between the 2 hammock, thus reducing it's effectiveness.

Not a bad idea for an on-the-fly setup, though.

What you may be thinking of is an under quilt and underquilt protector (ie. 2QZQ's bottom of the page )
The underquilt is your insulation and suspension in one, and you can add a underquilt protector to help break any heavy winds or splashing from heavy rains. 2QZQ offers a waterproof or breathable one. You can add the waterproof one inbetween the hammock and uq to act as a vapor barrier, if used normally, vapor coming from your body will get trapped in the uq and condensation will collect in the insulation. Hence, the breathable option. There's even a version for a bridge hammock.

right i am familiar with underquilts from snooping around here and some of shugs videos just dont have the funds for one yet. Just thought it was an interesting option i guess that provided full length protection with materials at hand, but looking back on it it doesnt really seem plausible or very useful and an underquilt is a much more reasonable option. worked for a midday nap though!!

hikin hanger- yeah thats exactly what i did!!! good to see someone else thought of it. i really liked it but will probably switch to what titanium hiker posted to keep more wind out and have it set up more as a UQ so i can use the other hammock for gear.

titanium hiker- im a bit confused how the blanket is wrapped in a bag first. is it spread out the area of the tarp? the picture looks like its in a large clump

Pav - the Garlington insulator is designed to hold other insulation- he experimented with bags of air, bags with crinkled space blankets in bags, (trapped air= warmth) and with a 'bag o'feathers' (a down pillow, effectively) for warmth.

Did a similar set up at the Fall MAHHA. For my son we had one hammock strung though a sleeping bag. Used a second hammock suspended below to lift the bottom of the sleeping bag to prevent gaps. He said he slept as warm as could be.
