I broke a 3/4-inch thick trail stick once, even though I was careful to try to hang it on or above the knot. It must have slipped down and applied too much bending stress on the stick. I was glad I was hanging only a foot or so above the grass, and there were no rocks under me!
I've never had a problem with tent stakes or carabiners as toggles; I haven't tried an arrow shaft like some use. I weigh about 370 lbs. at this point.

sticks work fine, i ordered some toggles from diygearsupply.com, they are cheap and light!

On the knot, not the toggle......Shug is the best.....

i got us an arrow its carbon fiber but it should work.
