I am using Carabiners and rings for securing the hammock to the tree straps, ala trekingnut's video, and one of the rope's covering split leaving only the fibrous white inner threads holding the rope together.

It has been noted as a problem by some people. are you using an HH hammock? it really depends on the diameter of your cord and the diameter of your rappel rings as well.
Sorry to hear it happened anyway.... i have said many times that people must be careful but thats not going to make you feel any better... :(
I personally have never had a problem.... it might be luck of the draw and it might be the way people do it, ive no idea....
hope you get it all fixed up soon.....
i have added a warning to the video that you must try it out first and look at how it affects your rope and not to use it with any ultralight models or thin spectra chord!!!
If you're using Spectra, like on a Hennessy, then the sheath's purpose is to protect the Spectra strands on the inside. If those are exposed, I'd stop using the rings. You can put a new sheath on it to protect it, or if you don't stress the sheath anymore then you might be able to use duct tape for a temporary fix.
It's really not hard to replace the cords on a Hennessy, though...that's what I'd recommend.
Thanks for the feedback! I guess I'll be replacing the cord. I'll just have to decide what will be the best type of cord to replace the stock spectra with.
I'd use either amsteel or spyderline.

I had the same thing happen to me with my HH stock suspension cord while using descending rings. I switched over to whoopieslings and am very happy with the results. See the following video (# 1 post) at http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...t=13116&page=3 Ken did a great job on the video showing just how easy it is to convert from stock HH cordage to amsteel blue/whoopieslings. Take a look over the full thread if you're interested. There are some fine folks on this HF site that can supply you with the amsteel blue cordage if you like it, or you can get it from http://www.reddenmarine.com/amsteelblue/ . By the way, amsteelblue is the name of the cord. You have colors other than blue to choose from if you desire. 7/64 cord is what I and a lot of others use.
Also, see Grizz's video (particularly at the 6:00 to 7:22 minute marks) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPpndtQKWH4 about 1 way to connect whoopiesling to tree straps.
Hope this helps.
