Some sil nylon is listed as double coated, other as single coated. I've searched here and in DIY. Nada substantive.
What is the practical importance of the difference for protection from rain? (which may, for example be different from resistance to rot and staining)
As there are nylons which are incompletely DWR and incompletely sil-treated, is the benefit just that of a third coat of paint,filling all missed spots?
Not really sure - don't have any answers for you. I can say this - it was something that caught my eye some time ago. On DIY Gear supply there was a silnylon second on sale and in the description is listed as coated on only one side - here.

I was trying to learn something to share that was independent of Scittlefield's report on what DIY gear sells.
Trying to find out if single vs double- coated is a distinction without a difference as a criterion in selecting the fabric.
Do you think that "coating" has something to do with the way the sil is applied? Dunking vs. spraying? I'd think that dunking the whole fabric into a solution would penetrate more thoroughly than spraying or painting it on, and therefore only need one treatment. I was planning on making my own sil with the dunking method, one coat only. I figured that painting it on would be less "all covering".
