2nd winter trip in Hammock.

This weekend my son and I spent 3 days in the eno hammocks. The lowest temps that we hit on this trip were -6 deg F.

My son has a homemade quilt that lays inside of the bag and he used a 15 deg bag. Even with the low temps he said that he remained quite warm. I used a much warmer bag, -40bag, with a closed cell pad and 2 wool blankets under me. I was warm as well.

The weather was windy the first night but the tarps blocked most of the wind. The last 2 nights the temps were low but there was no wind.

I am happy with the results we both had with the hammocks. This is the first time that we were in the hammocks with sub zero temps.

With these types of results we may never spend a night on the ground again.:D

Sounds like a perfect report!
You said you used a ccf pad underneath you. How about your son? You didn't make mention of any under quilts.
That would be great news if you stayed warm at those temps w/ no under quilts & only one of you was using a ccf pad!

We made a quilt that he puts into the hammock instead of under. It is made out of polar fleece and 1"thick dacron filling. He folds it in half and lays on top of it. It gives him 4 layers of fleece and 2"of dacron. I know that he is compressing it but that hasn'"t been a problem. We are careful to sut up so that we are blocking that wind with the tarp as much as possible. I use jut a ez pad with 2 wool blanket folded in half and wrapped around the pad.

This has worked for us so far. We aren't new to winter camping and very cold temps, just new to the whole hammock thing. AND WE LOVE IT!!!

I'm impressed that the fleece/dacron and wool/pad worked into negative temps. Nice!

I'm not to surprised that enough layers of fleece & stuff can work underneath you, but the obvious draw back would be the extra bulk & weight that would have to be carried if a person were hiking very far.
But it's pretty amazing what can be made to work when we just have to (or just choose to) use what we already have.

You are right this quilt is quite bulky. The first time that it was used we hauled our gear in on sleds. This time we were close to the cars. If the trips were longer and on rougher trails this would be hard to use. We are looking into making something that would be able to transported in a backpack.

The ez pad and the 2 wool blankets is my normal bed roll in the summer. I just add a sleeping bag for the winter time.
