Diamond Vs. Hex

Hey Guys,
I know there are a lot of threads out there like this, but I'm having a hard time deciding between the claytor diamond tarp and the Hennesy hex(I'd be getting the cheaper polyester hex).
I don't camp in the winter, so I honestly don't think I need a super heavy duty tarp, but I've been using a walmart blue tarp, so anything I get is probably going to be lighter than what I"m used to. They're both about the same price, so i'm honestly not sure which one would be "better".
What's your guys opinion?

I like the Hennessy Hex; it's kept me dry in everything from "morning dew" to "Nairobi monsoon season" in terms of precipitation.

That being said, it really depends on what kind of camping you do. Do you want a place where you can hang out with friends during downpours and cook food under or do you just want a tarp that keeps you dry while you sleep?

If it's the former, then the hex is probably a better bet. If it's the latter, then the diamond tarp will do you just fine and be lighter, to boot.

I like my Claytor diamond fly. A hex tarp is alittle more coverage but a diamond tarp is the simplest to set up. There probably isn't a "best" tarp, they all have strengths and weaknesses.

You guys think it's worth the extra $20 and 50 ounces to get the hex? I really don't need anything other than a tarp to cover me when I'm sleeping, but I'm also not super concerned with going ultra light. The main attraction I have to the diamond is it's slightly easier to set up only needing 2 stakes, and it's also a little bit cheaper. But if the hex is the difference between dry and damp in a huge rainstorm it might be the better choice.

I've never gotten wet under my Claytor diamond fly.

Get the diamond because it is big enough. The website says it is 4 meters/13' long. Your hammock may be under 9' long when it is hung.

If you can see that a big storm is coming, try to choose a campsite that is more sheltered from wind blown rain.

If I remember correctly, you can rig a kelty 9x9 diamond tarp as a hex because of the number of places you can attach guy lines...

Hennessy hex tarps lately have been asym...I don't know if these have replaced the standard symetrical style...their website isn't exactly clear on this. Make sure you know what you want, and then what you are actually ordering. ZQ

I don't think you can hang the Kelty 9 in rectangular mode, for lack of tie outs. You can with the Kelty 12 though.

All good points, it comes down to what you need which usually changes as you get out and enjoying the outdoors and become more comfortable with harsher weather conditions. It's really kind of hard to stop at one tarp, why not start with an asym and just figure on a bigger tarp for foul weather.
