'loop' knot on the whoopie end ?

Hey guys,

So, I managed to find some rope, woopie.

Now, I do not want to make the burried loop at the end that goes around your hammock, I want to use a simple but sturdy knot to make a loop that will not come loose. I see them in many pictures, and I guess nobody explains the knot as it should be common sense... but could anyone please tell me what knot I should use for that part?

Hold on. I don't think that you should be using a figure 8 knot in amsteel. There are very few knots that are safe to use in amsteel. This stuff is very slippery, and does a very poor job of holding knots. Splice an eye in it and pass the running end through the eye, like Kayak Karl showed. I would hate to hear of you taking a fall.

I agree with Pedro. It doesn't hold knots well and you need to derate the line if you put a knot in it. I think a figure 8 is a fairly "generous" knot, but I don't recall the numbers. Maybe 25% strength reduction. I say generous because a bowline is about a 50% strength reduction.

I could be mistaken but I think if you check the knot on any Warbonnet Blackbird with line suspension that Warbonnetguy uses a Figure 8 with a loop as the knot for the line suspension with Amsteel. I never had a problem with this before switching to Whoopies and I have never heard of a problem here on the Forum.

(Assuming you have Amsteel rope)
The best, strongest way to form a loop is the splice. It is simple. It is strong. It is the sturdiest way. Knots bend, kink, and stress the rope in a very small area. And thus actually weaken the rope, sometimes by 50%.
Lots of testing has been done.
