Welcome back Bigbogg!!!
I broke my back & lots of ribs in 2002. It was a few years later that I discovered the hammock.
It was great, but I found that I would soon become uncomfortable when I would sleep on anything to firm, including the tightly stretched fabric of some hammocks.
What I found to work best for me was a thick air mat filled with down, called the Exped Down Air Mat (DAM).
I softly inflate it so it is soft & conforming.
They are a little costly (about$135 I think) so if you can't afford one right now, you could probably try to imitate it by using less expensive stuff.
If your trip with the scouts will be car camping, you might start by putting your pad in the hammock & covering it with 1, 2 or 3 folded blankets to give it loft & cushion.
I had Discectomy and Spinal Fusion of the L5-S1. And have had to us a brace. The way i fell also tour my Acl in my right knee. I have great luck. But my Dad always told me go big or go home. And no I don't mind you asking. It gives me something to do. I have not been releasesd to work yet. I should be back the first of October.
Glad to hear you are back and not on your back.
If you've got a spare bag this worked out pretty good for me... http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=38978
Total cost of the clips is about $8 or so, $4 for some 550 and another buck or two for some shock cord. I used it this past weekend down to about 47f and it was super toasty with my down bag.
and the black office clips might be even cheaper, and easier to find.. see if you could borrow another sleeping bag, and use all that good scout knot knowledge to bodge something up...good luck with the 'physical therapy'! KM
BigBogg, Glad to hear your getting better. In feb 2008, I had a Discectomy in L4-5 and it took some time to recover. Honestly the depression from the pain meds (got off them asap!)and feeling of helplessness (wife is a stay at home mom) was the worst. It took some time to get a physical therapist, but they were my saviors through all of it. At one point, I could barely tie my own shoes and the doctor said he thought my recovery was ahead of schedule..... all garbage. I listened to my therapists and did every stretch I was told and as often as I was told and made leaps and bounds progress quick. I wish you luck in recovery, as my hammock discovery had made camping more enjoyable than ever.
Welcome back! Hope the hang goes well for you and you don't have any pain.
