would have loved to be in on this deal. No Kmarts where I live.
dave
I got 5 pillows, do you guys think this is enough for a winter TQ/UQ combo?
I am making 45 x 60 UQ hoping for 2.5" loft using 16 oz of Kmart pillow down.
I am hoping this will get me to 30 degrees.
I am making 50ish x 75ish TQ with 1.5" loft using 16 oz of Kmart down.
1.5" of loft is rated for about 40-50 degrees, but I am hoping to get to 30 when used with UQ.
I am a novice. Maybe some others will chime in.
BTW I am getting my temp ratings from here:

Anybody made a UQ from this down yet?
I am trying to calculate how much down I need for a 30 degree quilt.
45" x 60" x 2.5" loft = volume of 6,750 sq. inches.
I have never seen an UQ in person. I think a lot of people on their first DIY UQ are doubtful there will be enuf insulation. Thats where I am now and I want to put all 16 oz into it.
Then there are people like MAD777 who try to convince me a total of 2oz of down or some other crazy low number is OK.
6,750 / 425 FP = 15.75 oz
6,750 / 500 FP = 13.50 oz
6,750 / 550 FP = 12.25 oz
6,750 / 800 FP = 8.50 oz (I know its not 800 FP)
I know we will never have the true Fill Power, but has anyone made anything yet and able to report on loft / oz ratios?
wwk10, I made a UQ that should be pretty good down to 40F out of less than one pillow. I was in the 10-12oz range.
What kind of hammock do you have? On a bridge, 45" wide is *really* wide. Mine is about 36" wide and it is just about perfect.
I could buy the 15.75oz measurement for those dimensions. You're going considerably larger than I did, and I've got roughly the same amount of loft.
Frost,
I re read this thread and realized you and I have already had this discussion.
I think its between 450 and 500. I think 16 oz will get me close to the same loft you have.
Mine is considerably bigger. Do you think I should slim it down some? Its not for a bridge. Its for a regular gathered end 60" wide hammock. Is 45" too wide?
I am going to use CatSplats differential cut underquilt calculator. Using your dimensions, and if you estimate worse case being 450FP, with 20% overfill, 17.23 oz fill. Using 1.1oz shell and noseeum, you should hit 23.89 oz total weight minus suspension. If you count on it at 500FP, you will see 15.5oz down needed (this all based on 9 baffles)
"PrimaLoft One" is comparable to 550fp down in the warmth/weight ratio. That's their claim and I'd agree to it given my own experience. (However, ANY primaloft insulation is no where near down compressibility) After making 2 primaloft one quilts from the 3oz rolls, i grew to really like that stuff. You have to sew 3inch channels or 6in boxes in order to keep the primaloft one from separating and clumping though, so 2 offset layers are a must in order to prevent cold spots.
Overall, i love down instead of the current synthetics. Unless you are accident prone, you will never get your stuff wet. After ~2 years of nights in a hammock, i still haven't gotten my down TQ or UQ wet (credit the EXCELLENT triple pass DWR on thru-hiker.com's momentum50 ripstop nylon shedding water splash like it's nothing. I have that on the underside of my UQ. And just a lot of downproof + DWR from nikwax b4 m50)
Not to mention, you're never gunna go camping in cold and/or wet weather without sufficient warm clothing and shelter making materials (like a tomahawk!!!) In order to ensure survival in the midst of accidents :-)
