For me, it can in some cases. I find on my DIY, unless I really crank down the gathered end, it can give me a ridge down the middle from uneven gathering. I tend to use channel on shorter hammocks to get the full amount I can and gathered for larger.

Experimenting on my table cloth I found the whipped end in to be more comfortable and sides less floppy.
That's a good question/argument. For a true comparison, you'd have to have a longer hammock to have the whipped ends the same distance as the channeled. My thought (just a thought) is the channel loops act (on a small scale) as a spreader. Where a whipped end squeezes the fabric together. Some like one, some like the other HYOH.
I'm definitely not trying to start a debate though.

On a whipped end hammock you can change the way the tightness of the sides but I've never really noticed a difference in the lay compared to a gathered end hammock. That is assuming the length between the whipped ends is the same as the length between the gathered ends.
