I've only once used a foot pad and after 20 minutes got annoyed with it. I used my sit pad which is 20" x 12" x 1/2". Its a blue wal mart ccf pad. It may have annoyed me because its a bit stiffer than say the gossamer gear pads, I may order one of those to give it a shot though. I've been down to 19 degrees with no foot pad or even a tq with a foot box and was fine. I do wake up in a fetal position a lot though so my 3/4 uq covers most of me.
I must say having a sit pad at camp has became my new favorite piece of gear.
thanks for all the advise.
i decided to go with a thermarest trail seat as i will also be using it on cold metal stadium seating.
Gossamer Gear 1/8" pad (~60" x20") ccf @ ~2oz. inside the foot box of the tq. Just fold it in 1/2 or 1/3 and stick it into the foot box. Multifunctional pad. If conditions get bit colder than expected it could be used as a pad to supplement the uq. Sit pad. Torso wrap inside your jacket (desperate) to warm up a chilled body while setting up camp. Minimalist grounded pad. Just add whatever Nature will provide for some additional padding and insulation. Rolls to a thin light package that can be placed anywhere convenient on or in your pack. Don't feel like packing the pad. Soft gear just piled under the foot area.
