For those of us who like to look up into the clouds, has any one attempted a transparent tarp?
I was thinking (if weight and pack size wasn't an issue) of some sort of PVC material, sort of what those nice smelling anoraks are made from :D

Here is a thread for you....http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ansparent+tarp
You mean like this? :D

This tarp is made from Mylar, not PVC. The weight is reasonable, but I don't recall it off-hand (Here is the original thread with more details). There are some issues with it; most notably the lack of compressibility...there is none! However, it's a fun tarp. I've taken it out many times since it was built and haven't had any major problems with it. "Transparent" is a little misleading. You can see Genuine Draft pretty clearly because she is standing right next to the tarp wall, but add a little distance and the clearness dissipates quickly. It is not like a glass pane, nor even close. Kind of like looking through a frosted bathroom window; little bit better than that, but you get the idea.
No sewing required, just tape. It's a novelty tarp for me, but among my favorites. :thumbup1:
The only downside do a transparent tarp is, no shade. But that's not much of a probably anyways.
I used to sleep under a clear poly 4mil tarp, it was usually good for about 6 trips before I would replace it. I enjoyed being able to see the sky. For tie out attachments I would use a small rubber ball on the inside and tie the lines around the plastic on the other side.
Thanks for the link and pic! Was just a quick thought! I wish there were Walmarts in the UK. Srsly you can get everything in there.
If you use a transparent tarp, get dressed in the basement. :scared::laugh:
At a time of the year when I don't do straight lines, but zig and zag from shady patch to shady patch, this is unthinkable. HYOH.
won't be long before someone figures out how to make a transitional tarp - like glasses that get darker in the sun, then lighter inside. When the sun sets the tarp turns clear, when it rises the tarp turns dark.
