How would this combo fare for the coldest sections of the AT during a Thru hike? Also for those of you who have tried Winter Yeti's + TQ's let me know how low you have gone, and if you think it would work for a thru hike.
I like this combo for a few reasons: Winter yeti is light, as is rocky or similar, and if it works for the coldest areas of the AT, then its what im looking for.
Too much underquilt.
A bit overkill for the AT IMO, unless you are heading north in January or Feb. There might be 3 or 4 nights (with a traditional start date) that a 3 season Yeti would be iffy and I would just use extra clothing to make-up the difference. A Winter Yeti, although easily ventable, is not going to give you as wide of a temp range; gonna be too warm fast. A 3 Season Yeti will most likely cover your entire hike.

I will be a teacher when i do the thru hike, i will have summers off so the coldest i see in the may-aug section of the chart is low 20's. I already have a summer yeti, i am waiting on another WBBB + yeti for my wife too. We will both be thru'ing with WBBB's and summer yeti's, so you think a no sniv would be a good topquilt for us? Save us the weight of down jackets.
We will be starting in MAY and hiking through august, typical nobo-hope that helps in advice. No we will not be completing the whole thing, probalby take 2 summers to do that. So i guess we are SECTION hiking.
Do you consider yourself a warm sleeper like Cannibal does? Does your wife sleep colder than you do? If my wife went with me, I would have to have way more insulation for her than for me. People vary so much, (in my experience anyway) especially comparing men to women's insulation needs.
Traditionally, in sleeping bags, 2.5" ( like a NS?) of down on top in a mummy bag was considered a 20* bag. But those bags had hood and draft collars and drafts on the side were not a consideration. I would say most likely with a separate hood you would be oK with a NS for occasional nights into low 20s, but hard to say. And depending on your clothes. If you are replacing a puffy jacket with the NS, you obviously then won't have as much clothing to add to your sleep system, since the puffy "jacket" IS your sleep system.
Took me a minute to figure out why those temps were what they are. Those readings are taken at summits from the look of it. I don't imagine you'll be sleeping in 20 degree weather from May thru Aug; I sure don't remember any of it, but would have been happy to see it. No Sniveler will be plenty of top quilt, too much at times.
If you're going to do it over 2 summers and you're going north, you don't even need to think about cold or cool temps during those months till your second year when you get up into the Whites. The bottom part of the AT during the summer months, you'll be wanting to carry an A/C unit. :lol:
SO then should i consider the stealth instead of the no sniv? I am a warm sleeper, i throw the covers off every night and its 68 in my house, my wife is a cold sleeper, maybe no sniv for her, stealth for me?
Also do i need to tell the jacks I have a warbonnet instead of a BMBH, or are all the attatchments to the hammocks on the jrb quilts made the same? In other words, is it like the speer where there is a universal and then the speer version?
the 3 season yeti should be good for warm sleepers into the 20's, cold sleepers into the 30's. the reflective liners should be coming out soon, one can only guess how many more deg that will give though

Oh, I'd definitely get a NS. Again, just for the wide temp range. If you can afford a Stealth, it would probably work for you based on your comments about being a warm sleeper. I used a Shenandoah from Hot Springs in early April to southern Vermont in August when I left the Trail. There was one really cold, wet, and miserable night. I can deal with one bad night out of 150 great ones. :shades:

Confused. Are you using the JRBs for UQ or are you using the Yeti? My MWUQ attaches differently to the BMBH than it does to a WB, but all the same JRB suspension gear is the same, use the same on both. You just attach it a bit differently. I'm pretty sure it will be the same with all of the JRB quilts. There are no dif versions, except you can get a MWUQ 3 convertible or not.Quote:

used this at Mt Rogers with no concerns and again later on a snowshoe trip were the temp fell. Winter is my favorite time to get out...love it!
Well the snaps for the liner will be there I'm sure. If it follows the 3Season Yeti, it will be a couple of ounces lighter than the old versions and pretty heavily overstuffed.Quote:

I'm planning to use the same set up for my eventual thru-hike.
3 season No sniveler and a 3 season Yeti the only item I might add to my set up is a Gossamer Gear pad.

Genuine Draft and I actually went to Home Depot several months ago with tape measure and hammocks in hand. They thought we were absolute nut-bags. We started talking about how one model would be better than the others because of the door placement. :scared: We finally decided that while we could easily afford the shed of our dreams, the land in the mountains to put it on would be another story. :(

They are more fabric (at least the ones I saw) than a space blanket. They don't have that crinkly feel, or sound, to them.
well, thats cool.... but what about condensation? Since its fabric - would that eliminate the condensation element....?

well, water condenses because it's warm on one side, cold on the other. like a cold bottle of beer, water forms on the warm side.
the yeti liner is between you and the yeti (between 2 warm spots) so condensation shouldn't be a problem.
it is a vapor barrier though, however it's not against your skin so it won't act nearly as much like one as does laying directly on ccf, but if you used it when you might overheat it might cause some moisture build-up, however it's removeable, so you only would use it when when you are closer to the too-cold side of thing (closer to the limit of the uq), in a situation like that, the vapor barrier part should be helpful. i've used one several times and not had any moisture. time will tell how it effects the back sweaters, but i suspect when used properly (when there's no chance of overheating from too much insulation) they too should be fine. cold sleepers like myself could probably use one below 50 deg (with the 3 season anyway) to increase the temp of the hammock fabric by several deg, something that's nice for folks who like a toastier sleep environment.
it's aluminized ripstop. once they are ready, i'll shoot an email to everyone who purchased a yeti from me. not sure yet of the exact price.
In the past I used the ThermaDrape type reflective material as a layer between and was really warm but had moisture all through my hammock and bag. I am a sweater and maybe was dressed to warmly. But I don't need no moisture in the winter.......

well, maybe it's something that's not for everyone, only time will tell.
i might be able to get my hands on some breathable reflective fabric, haven't seen a sample though, so can't say how breathable it is. i think the current stuff will at least be be useful for cold sleepers though. (or at least non back-sweaters)
I cant find the info on your yetti.... I was curious about the price and weight?
my 3 season yeti weights about 12 oz

3 season.... i think said rated to 30*? - How much loft is in the three season compared to the four?
3 season is 20's for warm sleepers, 30's for cold sleepers
winter yeti will have about 40% more loft

well, it's generally in comparison to given ratings of your gear (like a sleeping bag) can you easily get to the given rating and beyond while still comfy, or do you get cold above the given rating? are you tend to sleep hot or are you often cold?
3 season yeti is baffeled to 1.5" with a heavy overstuff. and lofts to about 3" when laying on the floor
