For a one nighter, Spence, or Table Rock to Wolfpit would be nice, but you'd need to do a shuttle. Study the water source at Chimney Gap. It's down the west slope out the back of the campsite there.

I'm hoping to get a second dose of that section. It got the best of me last time, but I think a little better information and a LOT more water will make it much more enjoyable.
Hawk-eye, I just picked up a Woodsman's Pal today. Would it be okay to whack some of the trail on the lower section of Shortoff? The trail looked to be in good condition, but that second year growth made seeing your feet nearly impossible.
I thought I'd ask since places like the Smokies require a permit, hard hat, protective glasses and a supervisor before you do anything.
Well actually the USFS requires you to have completed their class or work with a volunteer who has. So yeah it might be a problem on your own. Their also pretty specific on which trails can be cut.
The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of staying on the ridge and spending time, just as we have done below, along the river. That way, MedicineMan will be able to keep up, and Wisenber can see it in the daylight. :)
I'd love to find Timber Rattlers and lizards...
Once again have to miss, as I will be camping with a group from church up near Black Mountain/Bear Wallow area. Sometime I'll be able to make one. Fall is filling up already with the MAHHA dates announced. Hope the fall Gorge dates don't coincide with it.
I figured as much. That's a pity. I've had to go to classes for Haw Ridge, Lone Mtn. State Forest, Cherokee national Forest and the GSMNP already. It seems like every time you see some area that needs work and get motivated to do so, you have to schedule training a month or so out.:(
I understand why they do it, but it sure does result in discouraging volunteers.
Ok, it's Tuesday, so let's make a list of folks who will be in the Gorge with me this weekend. Then we can decide what we want to see.
MedicineMan & Wisenber, are you two still able to make it?
Wisenber, are you going to do two weekends in a rwo in the Gorge?
so far i'm go for launch....just tell me what days we are talking about so i can plan around the sheila....
Thing1 won't make it. I will be there late Friday evening, and will hang near the Spence Trailhead parking lot. I plan to return home on Sunday.
