28" wide 1/2" CCF pad at Walmart for $12

I was in the evil giant today and saw a new CCF pad that's 28" wide...probably wide enough for many folks to use as a stand-alone bottom insulation in the hammock. The contour pattern might actually reduce a lot of the condensation problems, too. It weighs 15 oz.

One problem is that it says .5" thick, but that's the contoured section. The CCF between the contour bulges is only about 1/8" thick...which will be the effective insulation between the hammocker and the environment.

Still...I think this might be a $12 solution down to around freezing for folks who are pretty comfortable using pads.

Yes, a 28in wide pad is just wide enough for me.

really jeff i'd be less concerned with the temp rating on that than i would be the bulk of it. 28x72x.5 is going to roll up to the size of my torso :o

So, you have an approx. 12" waist?:confused: Seriously, I think that for those who carry pads vertically, that's a pretty good deal, Jeff. I can't get down to freezing with one of those, but I'm a mega cold sleeper.

Is this the one that looks like blue egg crate material? I saw one of those the other day, but decided against it since I wasn't sure how well it would work with with my SPE.

It would not work with an SPE. An SPE takes 20" pads. But with the wider pad, you would not need the SPE if you are only using it to gain more width. If you're using it to stack pads, this would not work.

It is NOT the egg crate one...that's 24" wide, and probably not wide enough to use without a SPE. This new pad has shapes contoured into it that remind me of rocks.

With this pad at 28" wide, many folks wouldn't need a SPE.

Putting in some kind of darts would probably be helpful. I was thinking of some rounded parts cut out so there wouldn't be any sharp corners to cause rips...but yeah, at 28" you'd probably need something to help deal with the buckling.

I just saw that Tinny (minibulldesigns.com) has one of these pads on a newer video. He cut his down quite a bit but I am impressed by its flexibility. It seems long enough to double or even triple if needed for lower temps.
