Whoopie Sling DIY - Fixed Eye Loop/Locked Brummel

I am a complete newbie to hammocking. Am buying some Amsteel to make a whoopie sling.

I just wanted to ask - is it necessary to make the fixed eye loop/locked brummel at one end of the whoopie sling to attach it to the hammock (specifically, a Hennessy Hammock)? Could I just tie that end of the Amsteel directly to the hammock using the same knot/method that Hennessy uses to tie the standard rope that comes with the hammock (ie. is this same know secure for Amsteel)? Any particular advantages of having the fixed loop instead of just tying directly to the hammock?

I'll try to answer: Knots reduce the strength of the line significantly so most people avoid them out of an abundance of caution. Amsteel particularly is weakened by knots because it is not very strong when compressed. Also, amsteel is very slippery. The knot may either slip or tighten down so tight you'll never get it undone. For all these reasons, a fixed eye would be the better way to go. Best of luck to you! :D

Pips said it well. For me the ability to undo it from the hammock easily is the key. Once a knot is heavily loaded you'd have to cut the amsteel or you may damage it trying to undo it. Knots are used by some but depending on what you are going to do, splicing is stronger and easier to deal with. Its also fun to do. Lots of vids and pictorials out there and its not difficult to learn. Have fun!

YAY!!! Smart decision! Find some videos on "fixed eye" or "locked brummel" in amsteel and you'll be on your way! The process is the same no matter what the diameter of the amsteel is. Have fun!!!! :D
