Hex Fly - simple questions
Hi, I was camping with the delux and the standard fly and it got a little rainy and more than a bit blowy - so much so that the pegs flew out and the fly blew off several times in the night.
Would having the hex fly better protect me from rain and secure better as I assume it's got four points as opposed to just the two?
I've also just ordered an UQ from unsponsored and want to protect that if I can too...
You might try shock cord.
I have my hammock set up in the back yard and with the stock tie down strings even MSR Groundhogs would pull out when the wind starts whipping. I've replaced the string with shock cord and the problem went away.
Another vote for shock cord, and a Thank-You!
You have added to my vocabulary: "Pear-Shaped" (gotta love it!).
First off, I assume that you are comparing the hex to the standard diamond-shaped fly. With the hex being larger, there should be more square-footage exposed to the wind, but you will have two extra tie-out points. Hard to say what the resulting wind load to anchor point ratio might be . Longer stakes might be in order. MSR GroundHogs are a perennial favorite.
Some favor all-shockcord guylines; some of us like loops of shockcord in line with conventional guyline. That debate should go on forever!
But I do like the hex better than the stock diamond fly for nasty weather.
