I was gonna wait for warmer weather to sleep out in my hammock but the weathers' been just right lately so I'll risk a Feb. hang. Anyone want to camp or have some suggestions for somewhere in upstate SC? I'm also going canoeing / hanging on either the Tyger or the Enoree through the Sumter Nat. Forest later in the spring.... any words of wisdom? I'm between Greenville and Spartanburg SC.
Have you considered the Chattanooga River area or somewhere on the Foothills trail? I may be available depending on when you want to go.
The Eastatoe Creek area has lots of trees and plentiful water. It is under a 3 mile trek from the Foothills Trail access for Laurel Valley at 178. I've camped there a few times with the kids. Sometimes big scout groups show up.
I think it is Burrell's Ford on the Chatooga that has a more established "camping" area with picnic tables, outhouse style bathroom, etc.
There is also a decent spot hiking east from the Sassafrass Mountain parking area at an old homestead. It was also just a few miles.
One of my favorite spots other than Eastatoe is the first camping area hiking east from the Bad Creek parking area of the Foothills Trail. Just a trickle of water, but more nearby. Lots of trees and fairly peaceful. I think it is about a mile from the parking area.
If you want to hike more miles there are some great spots going east from the Bad Creek parking on the Foothills Trail around Bear Creek. Probably 7-8 miles in one way.
There's a hang currently scheduled for March 9-11 on the Chattooga River (http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=46422). I think the thread title is called north Georgia hang, but of course SC hangers are welcome (I'm from Columbia myself. Come join us!
I'm considering heading out Wednesday afternoon for some hiking and an overnight with some more hiking on Thursday back to the car. If you or anyone else wants to go...open invite.

Burrells Ford area is outside of Walhalla, so about 1 hr from you??? Technically, Mountain Rest??
Instead of camping at the Burrells Ford campground, which is hike in campground 1/2 mile down a forest service trail, go to the river and head north.
Trail entrance is east of the river 100 yds or so. There is a little covered map board if I remember correctly. Anywhere a long the east side of the river is a great spot. I prefer the east fork / chatooga river junction area.
Easy hike along well worn footpath along the river. A couple miles maybe to east fork junction. it may not be that far, but it seemed like 10 because our packs were loaded with cans in and out last time.
