silk or ripstop? or ?
My preference is polyester taffeta. Easy to get a hold of. Easy to work with. Very stable and stretch resistant. Nylon taffeta is the next choice. Silk is fabulous if you want to spend the money and take the maintenance hit. As a natural fiber silk needs special handling to keep it in top form. Absolutely superb choice but the fuss factor is greater than with the synthetic fibers. A "parachute silk" weight polyester or nylon is a more than effective compromise between performance and care-free hanging.
I don't think there is one correct answer. That's almost like asking "What's the best food?"
I like ripstop nylon most of the time. Silk is nice for indoors or really hot weather. When it gets cold, I use a PU coated polyester that works as a vb between me and my down.
Silnylon even works great. I think all materials have their pro's and con's. Just use the one thats most available to you.
Based on reading this forum, I'd say most people use ripstop nylon. That doesn't make it the best though.
I'd be disinclined to use silk for the reasons Ramblinrev lists.
