So after trial and error with the UQ, and at the suggestion of rjcress, I put together a set of "Triangle Thingies".

Wow, recce906. Those look much better than the ones I made. :)
I like the clips you used for attachment.
I use soft shackles / nacrabiners for mine.
The nacrabiners are light, but can be hard to operate with gloves or cold fingers. Your solution looks a bit easier.
What material did you use?
Glad they are working for you.
Jeff
Very nicely executed!
Thanks for the words of encouragement.
Jeff,
The material is a cordura nylon re-purposed from an old bag that I had laying around. It isn't as light weight as what it could be, but it should be pretty much bulletproof.
The hooks are by Dritz and were picked up from Joann's. The D Rings are also re-purposed and are synthetic. With gloves, there shouldn't be a problem working these.
I tried these out the other night and they worked great. Got down to around 34* F with no major issues. I'll post up a review and pictures of my set-up soon.
Thanks again,
Rick
Very nice looking. I'd like to give this a shot.
Very nice looking. What are the dimensions?
Rough Dimensions are as follows:
From base to apex is 12 inches. From d-ring end to end is 15 1/2 inches.
I started with that and created a 1/2 inch seam all the way around. From there, it was simply a matter of sewing in the webbing with the rotating hooks and the d rings.
+1 on repurposing material.
I made a GVP G4 Scout backpack a few months ago and nearly the entire pack is repurposed material. I think it makes the pack lighter. :):cool:
what are those things for?
UQ Thingies aid in positioning uour UQ better. Check AHE for a diagram.
Now the Q: Would a simple "skeleton" sewn from light web or grosgrain with no fabric at all work? I feel a test project coming on this weekend.......
