Here is what I am thinking, i have several poncho liners laying about and I want a full length quilt. As I have a Hennessey expedition I thought I would use the DIY KAQ plans and make one. I am thinking that I will use one poncho liner as the outside layer and a second for the inner layer. I just wondering what you all think will happen? I must admit that I am not sure what will happen where you are suppose to put the darts. Any words of advice would be greatly appreciated.
I should also state that I was just planning on using ONLY the poncho liners and not adding any other insulation. I have used my no sew PLUQ down to 45ish and was chilly so thinking that the full coverage of the KAQ would give me some more temp to work with.
This doesn't sound like a bad plan, though I would not expect 2 layers of poncho liner to get you much below 45.. unless you're a born heat-generator like Cannibal who can sleep in the snow in his skivvies...
To keep the outer layer from crushing the inner, I would add 1" or so to the width of the outer layer... You'll have to gather that up somewhere on the ends, though...
Another option would be to make a single layer poncho liner and add some other insulation... Insul-Brite, Pellon Insul-Fleece come to mind... note that these aren't ultralight, but it might give you similar performance at slightly less weight.

My thought was that the full coverage of the KAQ/Potomac would add a few more degrees as it would cover edge to edge on my expedition. I don't need it good into the 30's but I was a little chilly at 44 and windy, three weeks ago in the BWCA. I don't think the quilt will be too much heavier than the PLUQ but will have a lot of coverage. I guess I need to try it and if it doesn't then everyone will have learned something.
"Climashield is $16 a yard at thru-hiker.com, with shipping that will push it up to the cost of a PL. The CS width is 60" so could you put a 36" x 60" piece of it between the PLs to boost the thickness?
Would a thrift store have a comforter with synthetic insulation that could be cut to size then added to the PLs?
If you are going that route, ikea has cheap.comforters, but compressing the will destroy their loft. If I remember, they start at $7 and are thicker than a pl.
