Whoopie sling length ?
Since I have made a hammock stand that is only 11' long, I cannot use the whoopie slings I've made for the trees. My question is how short of a WS can be used and still be safe? My concern is the WS works by the constriction of the outer rope over the inner rope. At some point in making a short bury, there will not be enough outer rope to make purchase on the inner. Has anyone experimented with this?

The recommendations I've seen range from 6-10" of bury length. That said, I made a set of slings with a 4" bury just to see what happened and they held fine.

Ive gone down to 7" and that held fine.

I ran into the same problem setting up my hammock on my balcony. (Tiny military appt) Here's what I did. I put the whole loop through the mounting eye on both ends. Then I brought the loops together at the center above the hammock and used a carabiner to clip them together. Adjust your tension and it works great and when my tarp is set up, I can tighten down the tieouts really tight and when I get in the hammock, it tensions the Whoopie slings which makes for a really taut tarp pitch. Kinda like the opposite of the HH stock setup. I've even considered doing this in the field, but at a 30* hang, the tarp would be at least a couple feet over the hammock. So I still tie the tarp to the trees below the hammock straps. Make sense?

Thanks for the replies. I tried a 4" bury last night and it held okay. I put a slack webbing backup on just in case. I would have really hated to land on the hammock stand.
