Cinch Buckles over time

Ok, I just suddenly remembered this thread.

In it we talked about how cinch buckles could damage your webbing over time and make it unsafe. Cannibal did lose the bet, but not because of a suspension failure. That has nothing to do with what I am talking about here, but I just thought I would remind everyone that i won that bet.

Back on topic. The discussion was on how safe cinch buckles were over time, and no one was entirely sure. So I figured I would post my experience on it. I used the thin yellow Harbor Freight webbing, and cinch buckles on my thru last year. I probably had 5 months of hanging total, and have absolutely no wear on the webbing. There are no creases, indentations, or any sings of wear on the webbing from the buckles. There are some when you use them, but after washing the webbing they disappear. So I think those marks are kind of like wrinkles in the polyester. That's really all I gots to say. Figured I would bring this back up since it was never really concluded.

Just out of curiosity, how often do you guys replace your straps? Considering that poly strap is cheap, why not just replace them every year or so? Or do you already?

I've only had to replace my webbing once for maintenance. It had a huge gash in it from a broken (welded) steel ring. When it snapped and the webbing was drug thru it, the sharp point tore the webbing down the center for about 8" if I remember correctly. It was a few days to the next town, but the webbing (strapworks.com) held even damaged. The stuff is tuff!:shades:

Now, have I replaced some of my webbing for other reasons? Well sure I have. Usually to gain a few grams of weight savings as I find better stuff. I've still got some of my original webbing from about two years ago. It has held up fine with the rings I use.

Hey, thanks for the long term report Nest!!!
I was one of those that had concerns about how hard the cinch buckle might be on the webbing. Good to hear a real world report.
