If I do a 3/4 length 30% overstuffed UQ ( 30% because if I do one, I want it to work well no matter what ).......am I going to be miserably hot in the summer? Will it take away the heat if I leave a small gap at the ends? Or should I just say the heck with it and have something lighter for summer insulation? What do you use for an all year quilt or is there such an animal?
Depends on the range of temps where you live really, in the UK we can probably get away with it, night temps rarely get above 15c (60f) in summer and below -5c (41f) in winter so just venting quilts is viable. Venting will definitely cool you down but I've no idea to what extent or really even what rating your quilt is for.
You can definitely get away with venting an UQ during the warmer season. It is the way I would go on a budget. Get the most UQ you can and then use other options for warmer nights (pad, pluq, sleeping bag) any thing much over 75 at night and you won't want anything under you at all.Quote:

You can even make a summer UQ out of a synthetic poncho liner for summer which would be good to 55 or so degrees, double it, and you might get to 40 and you can pick a poncho liner up at army surplus or on the net for as little as 20-25 bucks for a summer UQ. I use a AHE 50 degree Jarbridge in the Summer and even occasionally vent it, and if you keep a watchful eye on AHE and when they have sales, you can pick one up for alot less that normal sell price. Even making one out of synthetics if you sew, can be done pretty easy also. I prefer 3 UQ's ,,,,summer, 3 season, and winter, Keeps the venting down to a minumal.Your from Iowa,,where you will have alot of heat and humidity in the summer sometimes as well as dry heat other times.
Yeah, it might be a stretch to do it with a single quilt. I had considered the PLUQ route because I don't want to have to pull a quilt out from under me and put it back intermittently, seems like a hassle. I pretty much have on hand what I'll need for the PLUQ so it's not a big thing to make one up. Looks like I'll keep a pair on hand.
