Check it out. This seems to be a Grand Trunk tarp. Might be a good spare or first time option for short $$$$

thanks!
Just my opinion, but the WW tarp is big and heavy. Metal grommets, reinforced and coated both sides. Maybe a good car camping tarp for a nice big shelter, but I wouldn't want to put it on my back.
The first tarp has looks better to me. Smaller but should make plenty of coverage for a hammock, and less than 2lbs. Still too heavy for me, but I may carry around something very much like this until I can afford Cuban prices.
Prices is right on both for sure.
look like the GT tarp is grommeted too. Is the texsport (walmart) tarp like the cheap blue ones? plasticy and rigid and (why did i type expensive?) heavy.
I have and have used the WM tarp. It is large but it gives you a lot of coverage. It is loud, can be difficult to get a taut pitch, and the weight was never that big of an issue for me. But it's cheap and can get you through till you can get something better.
My recommendation for anyone that is getting started and is in need of a tarp still is that the Wal-Mart blue tarps work fine. They are a bit heavy for backpacking with more than a weekend. And they have a lot of short comings compared to sil/spin/cuban but the price is a good starting point and you can learn some good tarp fundamentals. Also they can take a beating and are more forgiving than clear plastic drop cloths, which are also a popular place to start with tarps. I say spend the $10 on a WW tarp and use it till you can afford something that better fits your needs and camping style.
word... i have an ozark trail tarp i was going to use for a groundcloth on my alps mountaineering extreme 3. its a 10 mil tthickness, so yea it takes up space, but i would rather spend my loot on uq and tq to round out my gear..... or ill just stick with a tent.....no not really.
'Swhat I did (kind of). If price is more of an issue for you than weight, and if you have a Harbor Freight close by, check out their camo tarps--I got an 11x9 for around 10 bucks. You don't have to go blue (unless, of course, you like the blue, in which case... blue it up!)
Was looking for a cheap tarp so I grabbed one of these. $33 shipped? Yes please, now I'm good til I get a warbonnet BMJ. Thanks for the info!
so is the weight of this tarp really only 1 lb. without the stuff sack?
