That asym tarp might be pushing it even with a sock if there's wet precipitation. The nighttime winds are enough to soak a sock if you don't have a sheltered enough space. I'm leaning toward a diamond with my sock, but a bigger one.

Agreed, but (with everything up there) it will all depend on the weather outlook, day of. I have several silnylon tarps that have done me great in all sorts of weather, but I really want to give this new one a try. At Overmountain, the wind doesnt seem to be nearly the problem as at RHK, so maybe I use a bigger one on friday, and swap out on the way past the parking lot on saturday. Who knows, it could be 70 degrees and sunny the whole time.
you have to choose which side gets wet!
Wisenber, here are the overbooties I found:

They wont make it in time for this hang but nice to know they are out there weight wise. He's got a beefier version for the he-man types that like to hike in their down.
Here's a link to the National Weather Service's forecast for Grassy Ridge Bald. The forecast area include Roan High Knob too. Click HERE
We've got three inches of fresh snow at our house (at 3500 feet elevation) this morning. I'm sure the balds got even more. But I would not want to snowshoe or pull a pulk on that section of the AT. Some areas are deeply trenched and some areas have some big rocks you have to step up on.
Wish I was going with you! :D
I wish I could make it again this year but I have to work Sunday. Last year was fun despite the wind chill, snow fall, and intestinal issues. Hopefully next year and will definitely do a couple hangs over the course of the year with you guys
Those should keep the outside of a down bootie from getting wet, but I'll stick with my Wiggy's Sunwalkers for now. They're designed to be a pack boot liner, so they can handle moisture from inside and out. The inside is also waterproof. If worn as a bootie for a late night nature call, the bottoms will wipe off with a pack towel without issue. I've got some other down booties of the lower grade variety, and they don't seem to e nearly as warm. Combine that with a $49 price, and it's quite serviceable.
That being said, I've only worn mine as camp shoes since my feet tend to remain on the hot side during the night.
Pipsissewa thanks for that link....really good one.
very nice indeed. Wiggies has lots of nice things. Priority though is their suger lightweight waders.
