2013 Arkansas Ozark Hang - March 08-10

It’s time for another Arkansas Ozark Hang. This will be our 4th Ozark group hang. Many things to do: canoeing/kayaking, hiking, and just hanging around. You can rent or bring your own boat if you want to float. Everyone is invited.
If you are not sure about camping in a hammock, this is the place to be to see most all of them. We will be at Kyles Landing on the Buffalo River. They have vault Bathrooms and camping is free until March 15. We pick this date to beat Spring Break crowds. I will be there March 7-10th. We are also having a potluck Saturday evening the 9th. This is family Friendly.

Kyles landing is between Jasper and Ponca off Hwy74. The gravel road is long and steep. When you enter the camp grounds we will be on the right side. Please let me know if you are interested, so we have an idea how many will be there.

Note: If you make this trip and we have more hangers then trees in this area, to the left of the camp grounds along the Buffalo river are backpacking / hiking trails. People can hang in the woods close to the Buffalo if needed. I will relocate/move my camp with you…

I've been wondering where I was going to go in March. It looks like I may have just found the answer! :) Go ahead and mark me in.

I've been really wanting to do some of the OHT. Does the trail cross through this campsite? I would like to hike in if possible?

This is the prettiest place for a hang ... I'll miss out on this one .. but I'll have my Smokehouse with me in doing so .. if you haven't been to this hang ... go there...it's a great group and just awesome beauty ...

Blackwolf is the one to talk with on that,,, he did a Thru hike on the OHT last year then bushwacked some of the way...

BlackWolf, still doing ur Thru up North???

I can't imagine missing it. I've marked the dates on the calendar and am looking forward to getting back to the Buffalo again. Count on three of us and maybe more.

I will try to make it this year. I have heard nice things about this hang.

P.S.: Caveman: I did the OHT awhile back (met Smokehouse for the first time at Hurricane Creek). The trail passes about 20 miles south at Haw Creek Falls Campground on AR 123.

I've taken youth groups down that very road for float trips. The river is truly a natural wonder, the first National Park created after Teddy Roosevelt saw it. With lots of family to visit in Arkansas I'd love to work this into a trip to Arkansas.

Yes .. I will be snowshoeing on the SHT .. 287 miles .. is that a good enough reason to miss this hang ??

MDSH, first national park was yellowstone, 1872, 100 yrs later, 1972 buffalo river designated, National River. Hot Springs was actually designated a nat'l park in 1832, but the congress failed to put restrictions on area and act on it, thus it ends up n middle of a town. Just demonstrates Washington hasn't changed much.

Thanks for the history lesson. :) This kind of info fascinates me.

I knew about Yellowstone, but Hot Springs is an interesting story.

MDSH is partially correct in that the Buffalo was the first National River, part of the National Park System but with a different designation. The same thing only different.:D

I will try to make it out to join you guys...sounds like fun.

This will be the first group hang in Arkansas (or nearby) since I started hanging last year.

Luckily, we don't have anything scheduled for that weekend, so my son (who also hangs and loves to camp and hang) and I should be there.

Ok. I'm in the planning phase for the trip. I'm going to do the Western part of the BRT. My plan is to start at Boxley on Thursday morning, hook up with the group on Friday afternoon (have a great weekend with some awesome folks). I'm going to head out Sunday morning and then finish up at Pruitt on Monday. I've been reading and watching videos and it seems that this is really a nice trail. I'm looking forward to it.

(oh man....I just found out that dogs are not permitted. I hate to leave my hiking buddy at home) :(

I'm putting this in my calendar. I only go to spend one night last year, I'm hoping I can find time for the whole weekend this year.

What's the weather like then? Cold I hope...

In march all you can do is hope. It could be cold, or cool, maybe warm. Probably not hot. Best guess is that it will be nice weather temperature wise for hiking and moving around in the day and a fire will feel nice in the evening. You'll want to bring an underquilt or pad.

I'm not sure how I missed the post for so long. Kept looking in the Midwest area instead of the southeast.:confused:
Dennis and I will be there for the event. I missed last year and am looking forward to this year.
We will be coming back from a Florida trip with the RV's after the Daytona race. We will park the campers and wives near by and join in the fun.

Took me a while to find the Arkansas group on here lol. I would love to come and I will try to be there. Will be my first group hang :D

I sure am envious of you all. I love that river, paddled it for a week 2 years ago, planning on a week long paddle the end of May this year. Hope water levels come up, was going to paddle it last May, CFS was 16!!:eek: A mere trickle. Ended up paddling the Eleven Point in MO. It was a great river. Have fun, and know I am certainly going to be thinking of you with envy.

I saw the list. I bet it will grow by the time of the hang.
We may get the wives to canoe the river is the flow and weather cooperate.

I would really like to come but, work is supposed to get really busy around that time. Really want to meet everyone and skim a little knowledge from everyone, but for now, put me In as a maybe.

put me down for a maybe. i would like to get a chance to meet everyone and check out their setups. hopefully pick up a few new ideas and tips from everyone. kyles is a great spot, ive been there many times and it never disappoints! if anyone gets a chance you should check out the indian creek trail (the eye of the needle trail), its close by and has a great waterfall.

Wolf, be more than happy to 'go through' I mean setup your gear... :lol:

I'm not set in stone yet, but am working on plans to come as we speak. Please add me and my teenage son as maybes. I've never been to a hammock forums hang and can't wait to meet some new hangers. Anyone else from the greater Memphis area coming? I live in Olive Branch, MS.

It is looking pretty good for me to make this but I won't know 100% until the week before unfortunately with my work schedule.
