Searching for sewing supplies at our "local" WalMart I only found two options for 100% polyester thread. Both Coat's brand. One was labeled for outdoor apparel. UV stable etc. +$4 for I think a 200yd spool. The other was for overlock machines. 3000yd for $1.94. I'm in the learning to sew phase. So I purchased the overlock spool of thread. Is this thread junk? Should I replace it with a thread of known high quality like the spools available from Speers for any DIY projects?

I have built two DIY hammocks with the overlock thread and both have held up fine. The fabric has ripped before the stitching in areas of failure. That said... When I built my Blackcat tarp I sprung for the outdoors thread because I want to make sure the things lasts. I found the outdoor thread to be of more consistent spin quality, but to be honest... I would have no difficulty using the overlock thread for about anything I sew. It is about the only thread my wife uses as well.
Outdoor thread is my pic. It has held well for the projects I have done.
I have used WM thread in the past, and while it will work, you will have problems like thread breakage and knotting problems. You would be much better off in the long run to find some Guttermans.
Since I bought my first sewing machine yesterday and I'm now an expert, the lady at JoAnn's had me pick up the Guttermans. The Coats they had was coated and I'm not sure if I read it here or where but I think that's frowned upon for our uses.
you can't go wrong with guttermanns... It is a very quality product. Wally thread does have its quirks, no doubt about that. But I can settle for the quirks my own self. YMMV :)
Cotton coated thread has the disadvantage of being highly weather impacted. It will hold up fine until the cotton coating rots off. Then you are dealing with half the thread you originally had. The thread that is UV neutralized will last the longest. But given enuf time and enuf use, any thread will deteriorate. The clock starts running when it comes off the spinner.
